The other I was looking at the Fashion Forum that @gertrudecloset Posted and saw some of the women with out of shape knees especially Carrie Underwood (one of my favorite singers). I was shocked because my Aunt's knees look just like theirs. What's up with that?

I think these supplements are a total waste of money and a chemical burden on your kidneys and liver to break down and flush from your body.

I was in my early 40's when diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knee; joint supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin did not work at all.  I relied on low level prescription NSAIDS for relief.

@RedTop  did you take the NSAIDS because of the pain? This has been going on with my aunt since last year, but no pain. Oh the Dr also told her to use voltaren gel.

@Sage04    Your aunt will undoubtedly progress in her disease and may eventually have troubling pain.  Hopefully not, but if it happened there are treatments available.  I think we all started off like your aunt.

Yes, the prescription NSAIDS addressed my pain and inflammation, without causing irritation of my stomach lining like ibuprofen.   At one point I also took Motrin 800, which was by prescription at that time.

Just want to add this to your post. I was on Celebrex for awhile because of the bursitis in my shoulder, it also had a partially torn rotator cuff. I had to have a kidney check every 3 months to keep my prescription renewed.

Later Celebrex and Vioxx, were known to possibly cause heart valve issues, and Vioxx was taken off the market. At that point I decided to quit taking Celebrex.

A year after that is when I started having my Colon Bleeding issues. That is when I came to understand that Celebrex, and other NSAIDS, were also blood thinners.

I mention this only for this reason. If one is considering asking their doctor for an NSAID Prescription. My suggestion would be to make sure that person asks their doctors about the Kidney and Bleeding risks. This is if they choose to use an NSAID for knee pain, be it Osteoarthritis, or other knee joint problems.

@Kachina624  that's what I was wondering. Because when I hear about arthritis I think of pain. Somehow I thought the diagnosis was wrong. She's in her 80's and so far only her left hand bothers her.

@RedTop  I don't know if it's because she wasn't in any pain why he didn't recomment an NSAID for the inflamation. My dad's doctor told him to take Bayer and it help him because he was in pain.

I'll ask her to call her doctor tomorrow because the swelling isn't going anywhere.

Re: Osteoarthritis

[ Edited ]

@Love my grandkids    @RedTop    I've taken the NSAID drug Lodine for close to 30 years and it has greatly helped my arthritis symptoms.  I have it all over my body.  I've had quarterly blood tests for years, monitoring kidney function.  There was a problem about 2 years ago and I cut my dosage in half.  I recently had my latest blood test and the doctor ordered me to stop the NSAID.

That was about 3 weeks ago and I have been utterly miserable ever since.  Hurt too much to do much of anything.  Can't sleep well due to joint throbbing.  Doctor prescribed an ample supply of Voltaren and Lidocaine patches but they barely help, and only temporarily.  I've tried a couple of acceptable meds but had bad reactions to both.  Don't want to take narcotics or controlled substances.  By the way, I was warned at one point to limit Tylenol as it can cause kidney damage.  It never helped anyway.  Aspirin and Motrin are also NSAIDs.

So here I sit....

Now that your Aunt knows, the most likely scenario, unless she addresses the problem will be pain? From my knowledge of physiology, especially of joints that support the body. If she doesn't start doing something to strengthen all the muscles that support the knee? Pain will follow, and possible knee repair or replacement.

I compare this to someone having a Heart Cath, before you have a heart attack. This is showing a great percentage of Artery Blockage. And the patient saying, "I think I will wait till have a heart attack(won't give typical symptoms because I didn't have them with my 2)symptoms", and then let the doctors save me.

If your aunt is wise, she will either go to a Physical Therapist, or look up some exercises for the muscle groups that support the knee and start doing them, like, now.

@hckynutjohn  I certainly understand exactly what you are saying. A few years ago I had a blood clot on my spleen. Was in the hospital for about a week. One doctor asked "who gets a blood clot on their spleen" we laugh but only because I knew I was getting better.

Before leaving the hospital I was told to take 325mg of aspirin. Right after that I suffered from cervical spine pain and the only thing that worked was 800mg of ibuprofen.

Had 2 Cervical spine fusions  one year apart and came off the ibuprofen. Switched to Kaiser and about six months ago I asked my doctor about the 325mg of aspirin. Asked her about reducing it and she did to 81mg. She said I was only supposed to be on the 325mg for 6 months.

So far kidneys are ok so I'm hoping they continue to function properly.
