I post quite a while back on having this for months. I had been taking several medicines to cure it and it never did after 6 months and several return appointments to my PCP. I had bloodwork and mouth culture with no reason for it.
I finally called my Gastroenterologist and he said to see amy dentist for a biopsy.
I went to my dentist and she did not do them. Gave me a special mouthwash that the druggist had to mix. No luck. I had her refer me to a specialist that was a Periodontist.
She didn't think it was thrush or a fungal infection and did two biopsies of my tongue.
I just went for the results and she was correct. I have what they call Hairy Tongue. It is a build up Keritin on my tongue.
I will have this all my life and my taste buds may return when it heals up. It probably will come back off and though.
Here is the explanation:
With hairy tongue, the tiny bumps on the surface of the tongue become bigger, looking similar to small hairs. These hairs can grow up to 18 millimeters in length. The surface also changes color, often becoming brown or black.
The upper surface of the tongue is rough in texture because it is covered in tiny, processes or protrusions called papillae. There are several types of papillae, the most numerous of which are called filiform papillae.
Filiform papillae are elongated, cone-shaped protrusions responsible for the gripping of food on the surface of the tongue. These structures usually grow to about 1 millimeter in length before they are shed from the tongue, allowing new ones to grow.
Hairy tongue occurs when these filiform papillae do not shed properly, and there is a buildup of the skin protein known as keratin. When this happens, food, bacteria, or yeast can accumulate in the over-keratinized filiform papillae network and cause odd discoloration.
When shedding is delayed, filiform papillae continue to build up in the keratin and resemble the hair-like protrusions from which the condition takes its name.
I am so happy as no cancer either. I do not have to see her unless I have a problem.
Just brush your teeth and use a small tongue scraper a few times a day. Drink lots of water-and I always have- and use a mouthwash for dry mouth as needed.
I tried about everything you suggested on this forum and nothing was working.
Posting this I hope I can help someone reading this to go further if necessary. I have even gotten some of my taste back. Yeah!
Have a great day. I will.

That does not sound like much fun dealing with this for so long. At least now you know what it is so you can treat it. Glad to hear it's not cancer.
Have you tried a neem tea tree oil toothpaste to see if that would help? Bet it does not taste the best but if it works it would be worth it.
Desert Essence makes a neem tea tree oil toothpaste.
I have used tea tree oil on my gums. Did not taste very good but it worked. My gum looked infected & pulling away from my tooth.
I always had this bio-film in my mouth. I use Sovereign Silver on my toothbrush with toothpaste to brush my teeth with. My bio-film is gone & my mouth & teeth feel really clean. It also keeps the plaque from building up on the teeth. The Sovereign Silver might also help.

@Nightowlz May I ask where you purchase Sovereign Silver? Is it a liquid like Colloidal silver? Are they the same?
My husband is having oral issues due to dry mouth, a side effect of a bone marrow transplant. He needs some help with his gums. I would be interested in getting this for him to try.
TIA

Yes it is liquid. Yes it's Colloidal Silver. I have been buying from Amazon. I was getting it at iherb but they have been sold out during Pandemic.
You can get a 4 oz dropper bottle for $19.99. I have several of those. I buy the large 32 oz bottle to refill them with.So sorry your DH is dealing with dry mouth. I also have dry mouth.
Hope this works for DH.
Spry makes gum, mouth wash, mouth spray etc with xylitol for dry mouth. It does help.
I was using it but was chewing way too much gum so I stopped.

@Nightowlz Thank you for responding. I am sorry to keep bothering you with questions, but I need some help with this. Do you dilute it with water and swish? Do you swallow it? I know you can drip it down your nose for sinus problems, so it must not be toxic. I have colloidal in my "stock" of alternative potions. LOL I will have him try this. He went to a gum specialist this week and she said it was not a good situation. Her recommendation was to brush AND floss after each time eating. She showed him exactly how to do it. He uses a WaterPik, but she said that isn't the same. She also said for him to brush his gums. He is using a high fluoride RX toothpaste. He doesn't have any loose teeth, but he still gets cavities because of the dry mouth. Who knew saliva was so important?
Thank you for your help.

No I don't dilute it. I don't swallow it but I used to. I take a dropper full apply to toothbrush add a dab on toothpaste on top then brush. You have to hold the brush so it does not run off.
I also put several droppers in my mouth to do a good rinse. Swishing as much as you can in between your teeth. I also use it as a gargle if I have a sore throat.
They do make a vertical spray to use in your nose which I have done.
If it does not help your DH he could always try some of the Spry products with xylitol. They do help. I prefer that brand over Biotene which I did not like. Some of those products leave a nasty taste in your mouth or they did me.
The dentist told me I had dry mouth which I did not know. So far I have not had dental problems.
I also take 2 of Andrew Lessman's Omega 3 fish oil daily which I think helps with my dry eyes & mouth. I drink a lot of water.
I hope your DH can find some relief.
If you have anymore questions just ask.

Thank you so much, @Nightowlz . We will give this a try. He has used every product under the sun for drop mouth including Biotene. The spray gives him some relief. I will look into the Spry products.
He also has dry eyes as a result of the transplant. He does take Andrew Lessman's omega, too.
Thanks again. If something else comes up, I know who to ask.
I will let you know about the silver.

Instead of trying the Spry maybe try this product I ran across called OraCoat XyliMelts. You put one disc on each side of the mouth pushed between gum & tooth to provide moisture while sleeping. Says it's extended release, stimulates saliva & reduces plaque by 50%.
You could check it out online. It can also be used during the day. They also make a gel.

@Nightowlz I bought these for him, but they won't stick to the side of his mouth because it is so dry. He tries them every once in awhile, but they usually end up thrown away. He has used the Biotene gel, spray, and mouthwash. He carries water with him all the time. I really feel for him. His tongue gets sore. It is a constant battle. He says it is a small price to pay to be cured from cancer. ![]()

I had never heard of that product but thought it might help.
I would use the Sovereign Silver. He can rinse his mouth with it to see if it will help. They also make a gel he could apply to any more sensitive areas.
My mouth is not as dry as it was. Not sure if the silver helped by killing all the germs or not. I'm still drinking water all day.
If he likes apples, carrots, celery try eating that. It says online it gets the saliva flowing. Don't use mouthwash with alcohol. Try Spry mouthwash with xylitol.
Hope he can find some relief since he most likely does not have much taste either so eating is no fun.
