Go to the drug store and try a back brace. Some of them have a stiff back in addition to the elastic material. That will keep your back more supported and less mobile and might help you to move around.
ETA: I've never taken pain medication for my back because I feel it makes one move in ways that injure the back even more. When I injure it, I use the brace and try to move only in ways that are not painful. I only have pain after lifting something way to heavy or such. Sometimes it takes many months to heal.
