Re: Olive 'bars' near salad 'bars'...?

LOL, we have salad bars, soup bars, hot food bars, cold food bars with ready to go sandwiches and desserts, AND olive and pepper bars with a large selection of olives, roasted peppers, hot peppers, roasted garlic......yes we buy from them. i dont eat olives, but i LOVE the roasted garlic and other family members love all of the other items.

for christmas we made a foot long cheese board and a foot long charcuterie board. that olive bar definitely comes in handy.

Thanks for all responses ! I think I'll just be trying a few olives 'from the bar' the next time I go to the grocery store !!

Olive bars are right up there with the telephone and air conditioning as inventions go to me. I LOVE olives and I can get a HUGE variety! I stop by every time I go to a store with one! And the little red Pappadaws are fabulous to!

Count me in as a great patron of every olive bar I pass!

Madisson: OMG!!! I didn't even THINK of that. Gross. Yes, yes, yes....I was at Whole Foods years ago & saw an old man stick his fingers in that olive bar to grab a couple & popped in his mouth!! That was yrs ago...forgot about that, but maybe I unconsciously associate that dirty finger with the ick of the open salad/olive bars in grocery stores of today, EEPS!!! Gross.

Re: Olive 'bars' near salad 'bars'...?

Our grocery store's deli has a bar with a variety of interesting olive varieties as well as other fancy "accent foods" like marinated mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, stuffed grape leaves, and the like. They're sold by weight and are rather pricey -- but I love olives and other "relishes" and buy some once in a while. The delicious feta-stuffed olives are my favorite.

I know...disgusting! I once saw an older man in a bakery department lift the clear dome lid that was over a plate of streusel samples. Before he could choose his piece, a big glob of drool came out of his mouth and landed on one of the pieces of streusel. I told one of the ladies behind the counter. Hopefully she put out a new plate. I tend to shy way from samples.

GUUUURL...I almost lost it!! Wow...that's a crazy story, but I TOTALLY believe you! People are so quick to get anything free & pop in their mouth with those free samples @ the stores..iknowiknow...the naysayers will go 'what about restaurants?'...but in some ways that's different when it's behind the scenes...gross the same!

One of the risks of being a person living among people. We all do the best we can, but occasionally germs happen in spite of our best efforts. Usually we don't even know it. If you're terribly concerned, you can eschew all food bars, buffets, and the like......or you can wear a mask and gloves and douse yourself in hand sanitizer every ten minutes. But there's no way to avoid every chance of unknown contamination in restaurant kitchens, grocery stores, restrooms, doctors' offices, public transit, and everywhere else. Be watchful, wash your hands, take your Vitamin C, and get on with it!

True...but I don't go looking for ickiness. Just like it wouldn't be a good idea to hold a bucket of gasoline in one hand & a lit match in the other hand, I'm not eating @ those 'open' bars where ANYone can contaminate food items. I'm not a fan of the bars or buffets...they are a 'lit match'. I'll touch a door handle to open a restroom door (then wash my hands), but I'm not going to lick that same handle! Crazy illustration, but hopefully my point is made. I guess I don't go looking for trouble, but if one does, Godspeed.
