Old Fashioned Cough Remedies

I have had a cold for the past 4 days and I am feeling better (no more chills and bodyaches), but, my voice is now gone and I have an awful cough I can't get rid of. I don't like over the counter cough syrups and really should not take some of them due to my high blood pressure. My doctor prescribed Benzonatate capsules that help some. Just wondering if any of you might have a homemade remedy that works for you that you might share. Thanks!

If you get can get a teaspon of organic honey down - that's good for coughs.

I also make a tea with fresh lemons and either honey or organic maple syrup.  That helps quiet a cough.

Hope you feel better!

Warm up some whiskey in the microwave with honey and lemon.  I feel so much better the next day. I don’t even like whiskey.

Re: Old Fashioned Cough Remedies

I pinned these 2 recipes in case I ever need them, but haven't tried them.

Bourbon Cough Syrup for Grownups

2 ounces bourbon whisky
1/2 lemon, juiced (about 2 ounces)
2-4 ounces water (optional)
1 tablespoon honey

Mix the bourbon, lemon juice, and water (if using) in a tumbler or mug and heat in the microwave for about 45 seconds. (You can also do this on the stovetop in a little saucepan.) Take out and add the honey. Whisk to combine, then microwave for another 45 seconds.

If you're sick, it's best not to drink this too hot; a good warm temperature is better. Take it to bed and nurse it slowly with a book in the other hand. Sleep well!

MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY

¼ teaspoon Cayenne
¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)

Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 Tablespoon as needed for cough. Hoo-wee.

Note: This is potent albeit watery syrup. It also doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using.

If you make this in small batches as the recipe is written, there is no need to refrigerate.

If you prefer, you may refrigerate this. It keeps as long as you need it. I like to make small batches (it is so easy to mix up.) and use it up in a just a few days.

Mix honey and lemon in some hot water. Also if you have some cough drops dissolve a couple of those in hot water and drink it. And if you have some Vicks rub it on your chest and the bottom of your feet. Put on some warm socks after you do that. These three things really do make a difference.

Re: Old Fashioned Cough Remedies

My grandmother’s cough syrup was a pound of horehound candy in a quart mason jar, and fill the jar with rye whiskey.   This concoction needs to marry for about 24 hours before dosing, but it always seemed to break up her chest colds and coughs.   She would never fill the prescriptions for cough syrup, just made her own.

Well, I had to laugh when I read this one. Nothing like Grandma's concoctions and this one sounds like it might just cure a lot of things! Woman LOL I'm not sure I even know what horehound candy is!

I am found of horehound candy and have a bag now ( Claeys).  I also use them to ease coughing.  They have a pleasant, herbal taste.

Re: Old Fashioned Cough Remedies

I’m just getting over my second cold/cough since Thanksgiving. I found that Ricola lemon mint cough drops were very soothing while I was awake, especially for a scratchy throat. I took an OTC nighttime cough syrup at night, but have to admit that its main benefit was knocking me out so I could get some sleep. I’m going to save the recipes for homemade cough syrups posted here for future use. You’re probably already doing this, but I found using 2 or 3 pillows was very helpful, too. I hope you feel better soon!

A shot of Jim Beam was my go to once, long ago. But now I opt for a cough drop.Woman Happy
