@Annabellethecat66

I completely agree with you that your original OP was completely misinterpreted by some of the posters here.  It’s a shame you had to keep trying to explain your point.

I, for one, got your point in your original OP. And I wholeheartedly agree with it. This is what these drug commercials do, no matter the specific illness being promoted.

These drugs are being “pushed” by Big Pharma, period.

I disagree .... and think the whole point of all these commercials is to encourage a dialogue between patient and doctor.

A lot of people aren't that forthcoming with their physicians, and even if that drug in the commercial isn't a good option, it gives the patient a starting point to describe what's happening in their life,  and why that commercial meant something to them.

I guess a lot of people still watch TV in real time .... ???    I record all shows &  fast forward through all commercials, because I find most of them a waste of my time.   Sitting through endless commercials has got to be torture.  JMO

Wow.

This is highly insensitive.

I echo many before me....depression is REAL, very real.

I might suggest reading about depression for some insight & understanding.

These commercials should not be allowed. It seems like everyone is taking something for depression or anxiety. These pills aren't candy.

There are people who do need them, but not most people. I believe most posters here have insight and understanding, that is why they are expressing their concerns.

@RetRN

Oh, c'mon .....  Of course these pills aren't candy ...  no one is even suggesting that.   So, from an advertiser's standpoint, what is the best medium for getting information out about new medicines on the market?   Newspapers?  Magazines?   I don't even recall the last time I held a newspaper .... TV is the best medium for advertisers, whether the product is diapers, pizza, vehicles ... or, yes, medicine.   Just ignore what doesn't interest you.

Big pharma can advertise anywhere they want. Most insurance companies will not pay thousands of dollars for a fancy brand when a generic is available.
Some conditions require advanced medicine and patients can not afford the treatment. This just makes me sad.

LOL, if big pharma wants to buy ad time on TV fine. This means jobs.

I figure that if your Dr tells you to take it he's a health professional....if you tell HIM you want it and he happily gives it (no exams etc) he's a drug dealer.

Re: OMG! I'm so tired of this medicine being PUSHED for .....

I agree with the post.  I think it was a shame when the pharmaceutical companies were allowed to directly advertise.  On top of it, western medicine does not do a good job of looking for underlying physical causes of depression.  My elderly father was showing signs of depression for the last 2 years as well as some general failing in his health.  We finally convinced him to see our wonderful doctor who is an integrative MD.  He is an indepdent doctor too (so rare these days).  He has extensive training and certifications in homeopathy, chinese medicine, nutrition, etc. Well, after extensive blood tests and other tests, my father came up with so many things....possible Lyme (still watching that as if you have Lyme and aren’t treated for it, none of your other problems will get better), parasites, H. Pylori, low thyroid, Epstein Barr virus (mono), and the list goes on......

Thank goodness we convinced him to see our doctor and not a regular doc.  He had just seen his regular doctor for a check a few months before and they didn’t catch ANY of this!!  They just ran a couple of labs and IGNORED all of my father’s complaints.  I think they tend to do this with older people and just shrug if off as “old age”.  Dad has been on several homeopathic meds and supplements and had to go gluten free.  It has only been about 5 weeks and he is already sleeping better and has had significant improvements in several of his other symptoms.  The doctor is addressing the most important health problems and then we will go down the list as addressing everything at once is too much for the body.

If anyone is not familiar with homeopathy, I highly suggest a certified homeopath!  My husband just got over a very difficult case of H.pylori as well as mono and Lyme using only homeopathy, supplements and diet.....we have the labs to prove it!  Three of us also had mono and two of my sons also had Lyme in the recent past....all cured with homeopathy.  THERE IS ANOTHER WAY!

@mam2fourboys

It is good your father is receiving proper care for his health issues.

I read an interesting article online about a husband and wife. They fought 10 years to recover from Lyme disease.

She is a film maker and author.

Well, I think the whole point of drug commercials is to sell drugs.

I don't watch much TV, mostly news, and I mostly watch that in real time.   But there do seem to be a lot of people who spend a lot of time watching TV, commercials and all.

Re: OMG! I'm so tired of this medicine being PUSHED for .....

OK, so we all have our opinions.

As I've said here many times, one good thing about TV is we/I/you (whatever) doesn't have to watch the commercial(s).  I do change or fast forward over commercials....as quickly or as much as I can.

Evidently some people like them or think they do good.  I happen to think they serve no purpose.

We've all been affected by what we've encountered in our own lives...

What I've lived through and seen (in my opinion here people) makes me who I am today.  Perhaps other's feel differently.

I can't imagine going to any of my Drs and bringing up the name (it would have to be written down) of any prescription.  When or if my Dr brings up something that he or she feels might work for me, THEN I will discuss it with the Dr.

This happens often with my Drs.  That is when we talk about it, I usually tell the Dr I'd like to read the pros and cons (further) and then I will get the prescription filled.

My  Grandma that raised me was 1/2 Cherokee Indian.  She taught me many remedies that have been useful over the years.   She taught me to know and understand MY BODY.    No one is going to look out for us as well as we do ourselves.

A Dr once told me that Drs try one thing and if that works, good....if it doesn't, they try something else and so on.  He said the difference between a Dr and a regular person is he's basing his 'ideas' on his education and years of practice.  At the same time each person is different and reacts differently.  AGAIN, I know me, I know how I feel when I take (or don't) take something.  I trust how I feel.

This all goes back to why I don't go to my Dr with the names and suggestions of medicine I've seen on TV.

The last time I checked....(for now) we are all entitled to our opinions.  I've stated mine.

I keep saying I'm not going to address this subject but I get my name mentioned and so many likes I feel like I have to keep coming back.

Drs are not gods (little g).  They do their best.  I sincerely doubt that most Drs appreciate a patient coming to them suggesting that they take this or that medicine because they read it on TV.

A quick note....don't get bent out of shape...some of you will get a kick out of it...other's can just move on but I feel like in a way it demonstrates what I'm trying to say here....move along if you don't want a Ha! Ha! (or..."I'm not surprised Annabelle did this).

So, way before we had children my late husband and I used to pick at each other (you know like I'd pluck his weird eyebrows, etc).  We were barely 19, married.

He has his head laying in my lap and I'm kissing him and tickling his face.  I said, "Wait!  Open your mouth!  I see a cavity!"

He says, "Where?"  I said, "In the back.  It's a big one and it looks bad.  I'll make an appointment with the dentist tomorrow.  Are you sure it doesn't hurt?"

He says, "No!  It doesn't hurt at all".

I made the EMERGENCY appointment at my dentist.  He goes in.  He's sitting in the chair, mouth open and the dentist says, "Mr. Annabelle, your teeth are beautiful.  No cavities and you only have one filling.  You take great care of your teeth."

He says, "No Dr, I have a bad cavity in the back.  It's one of the big teeth.  It's there, I know it's there".

The dentist says, "Like I said, you have no cavities and you only have one filling in your entire mouth".  The dentist pulls out a mirror to show my husband.  My husband says, "My wife should be here to show you where she saw the cavity.  I wish she'd have come with me."

The dentist says, "Is your wife a dentist too?  Why didn't she bring you into HER office to fix it?"

My husband says, "No....she isn't a dentist".

The Dentist says, "Who's your wife Mr. Annabelle?"

Mr. Annabelle says, "She's one of your patients.  She's Mrs. (first name) Annabelle".

The Dentist started laughing and said, "OK!  That explains it".

My late husband trusted me completely.  If I told him he needed something, he would seriously, at least consider it.

The funny thing was he was almost always (and I mean always) right and probably 8 times out of 10, he'd be right about something and ..........

I guess like they say, "Love is blind".  Ha!

One day I'll tell you guys the story of me examining his ears....another time, another story.
