Clearly the OP has no understanding how devastating depression can be and has not lost anyone to depression. Sadly, this is not an uncommon attitude. 'If it doesn't afftect me, it doesn't matter OMG!!!!!!! We need a whole lot more education on emotional and mental illnesses and need to stop shaming those afflicted.

@reiki604   Agree.  One of my nieces committed suicide after battling depression for years.  While these commercials may not always show depression in a clinical and professional light, it is important that anybody out there know that they are not alone.

The push for meds is always put on the blame of big pharma; whether a commercial or chatting here or in RL-there will always be some folks who THINK that they can identify with every mood, every ache, every symptom.

And right away we will see posters "advising" about what meds theing else y take which is just as bad as watching a commercial.

One cannot bash the commercials/big pharma then turn around and post about the meds they take which in turn can lead to another poster asking their doctor for the same thing.

Thank you @Cakers3 for so eloquently expessing these thoughts. I lost my brother to depression so I understand the need for public awareness of the problems. To those who find these ads disconcerting or annoying, like anything else on TV, you don't have to watch. If even 1 person is helped then their discomfort is worth it.

TV ads for drugs are not put out to “raise awareness” about diseases but rather to sell you the drugs. I would not confuse the two, they are not doing some public service. They want you to get in in your head that their drug is going to solve your problem so go ask your doctor for it. People sharing their experiences here on the forum is simple human interaction and trying to give real world experience with something vs watching an actor pretend to have a problem that gets miraculously solved by the pills. Big difference. I’d rather hear from a real person how something worked for their situation than have a drug company try to convince me with their highly produced ads when their only motive is get my money.  A real person giving advice is actually trying to help someone as they are not getting paid.

If one person's awareness is even marginally raised about mental illness and it's ramifications it is worth it. More so than the inaccurate and sometimes dangerous information given out on these boards by people without any medical knowledge or knowledge. This reasoning is why we have problems with previously eradicated diseases like measles.

It is best to see a Physician if you lost a loved one, friend, or pet, since depression can result in unexpected very traumatic suicide.

Lonliness can kill.

No one can easily handle lonliness, or separation by death, so medicines prescribed for depression, and medicines prescribed for sleep, and counseling one on one or in group sessions should be considered a top priority.

This is in order to safely survive the depression and live your lives with finding the inner strength to continue to live and survive on Earth.

A person really needs to fully comprehend and face all the trials and tribulations we all face when we cannot change what transpired, so we need medicines and inner strenth to accept medical help and therapy counceling  to live a better more satisfying earthly existence.

Also many believe in Heavenly Reunions, and  I also do so that gives me the inner strength, faith and courage to keep living until the day arrives and God calls me home for eternal rest  and everlasting life with everyone I loved and lost.

I agree awareness is good. I don’t think the drug ads help that much but if they do great. I for one have not seen any “dangerous” advice being given here, but I don’t know what an example of that would be. I’ve mostly seen people sharing ideas for things that helped their health or how they did with a certain medication or treatment. Personally drug ads do not affect me (other than being annoying at times) as I don’t take any Rx meds and if I thought I needed something I would research it online myself and talk to my doctor.

The drug commercial that the o/p is upset over is for Trintellux.

I wish that people could understand that having any form of mental illness whether it be depression, bi-polar, etc, is a living hell for the patient.

All of the judgement only makes the person suffering from mental illness, (and yes, they do suffer) feel worse.

IMO they should ban all drug related commercials as well as insurance commercials.

Perhaps if they didn't run so many, they could lower the price of things.

Re: OMG! I'm so tired of this medicine being PUSHED for .....

What I hate is that it appears doctors write a prescription at the drop of a hat.  I am not implying that medications are never necessary, but sometimes there are alternatives.  For example, for some people fifteen to thirty minutes per day - preferably while walking, and without sunscreen -  can help with depression.  Early morning is best, as the sun gets too hot to go without sunscreen later.I

You might ask your doctor if there is a nonprescription alternative.  So many people just want a pill for a quick fix that some doctors take the easy road.  It is a difficult line they walk and it can be difficult determining which route is best for which patient.

Good Luck.

Re: OMG! I'm so tired of this medicine being PUSHED for .....

A shrink I used to see pushed all the big designer TV drugs - the kind your insurance pushes back on and makes you jump regularly through hoops to get.  Shiny dressed up detail men from the drug companies were a regular fixture in the office.  One day the receptionist bragged how the various drug companies regularly catered lunch for the office several times a week.

That was a turn off.  Then I hear later how some doctors were paid "consulting fees" to over prescribe opioids.  I use kratom and am doing great now.  Not saying that is right for everyone or all doctors are sleazy but many push and overprescribe and seem to pick these types of expensive options.

@Annabellethecat66

I didn't read any of the responses.  However, I know from experience that when clinically depressed the thought of trying to get myself motivated to do the freaking laundry failed each time.  As a matter of fact, all household chores paled in importance compared to what was going on in my depressive state.

For those you haven't been there, you simply cannot imagine why those advertisement paint such pictures.
