Re: Numbness in hands and lips

Whilel I have all the respect in the world for ER doctors and have 2 of them playing in my hockey league, I also have first hand knowledge of things that are possible that were overlooked in an ER. I and not going to be labor the point about ER doctors and possible Oversights,, what I will suggest is that if your daughter got no definitive answers to this problem, it would be wise to get referred to a specialist in this field. this might be a neurologist it might be a cardiologist, but I think if she is really concerned about this she should pursue this further. I will leave it at that.

Re: Numbness in hands and lips

This really is a case where you need to cease this dialog now, pick up the phone and make an appointment for your daughter to have a comprehensive work-up by her internist/primary care physician. If she doesn't have one, call your physician. If this is the case, she'd be coming on board as a new patient. Generally speaking one can wait months for an appointment as a new patient. In this case, I would stress the symptoms she was having at home, not the watered down symptoms at the ER after sitting in chairs for several hours.

Make sure you ask for and get hard copies of all labs and tests done on your daughter prior to her doctor's appointment. If you're given a hard time, tell them your daughter's symptoms have returned on a daily basis and she is scheduled for a comprehensive work-up on _____________ (give them a date a week out). Yes, you'll be stretching the truth, but you need those records. I've done this on numerous occasions - Had to do it - and always been successful.

Heaviness in the chest is scary. I would have called 911, plus she would have been seen immediately. I don't want to scare you but the same thing happened to my friend in 1981. She had a normal EKG at the hospital, went home & was found dead on the floor the next morning. She was 29. Please call for a follow up.

Yep - I totally agree. My uncle experienced chest pain - he went to the ER - was seen by the Doctor - blood was drawn, tests performed and there was no sign of a heart event. My Aunt took him home where he experienced the exact same symptoms. My Aunt drove him back to the hospital - this time he ended up dying on the tarmac after the hospital discovered they where not able to handle his heart issue and where trying to send him to another hospital. I tell anyone/everyone to be a BIG B. A heart attack releases a enzyme that assists the Doctor with a diagnosis. However I do not think it stays in the system for a long time.

Your daughter is doing the right thing by following up with her PCP. If she has further problems she should say she needs to be seen immediately.

If it were an allergic reaction to a food would she not have broken out in a rash? My son developed a food allergy at 35 and had some of the same symptoms but also a rash. Almonds and he had eaten them his whole life. Now he carries an epi pen.

Re: Numbness in hands and lips

She absolutely needs to follow up with her doctor.

I was having lunch with my DH when out of nowhere I felt radiating pain across my shoulders and down my arms. At my age, I thought it was a heart attack so we went to the emergency room. After about ten hours of tests, no definitive answer was found. So they set me up with a Stress Test the next day. That too came out normal (even better than normal).... so they were stumped (for awhile). It turns out I have a pinched nerve in my neck and let me tell you that is one painful thing to have. It doesn't rear it's head too often, but when it does it can mimic several things, and often two occurances can be totally different.

I wish the best for your daughter and your family....

Re: Numbness in hands and lips

What foods had she eaten? Any fish, if so, what kind? Has the problem completely stopped? Did the hospital check cardiac enzymes to see if she had a heart attack? The enzyme test reveals this, even if an EKG doesn't show an attack. The shortness of breath can be anxiety related or derive from many illnesses, as can the clammy hands. The dizziness on standing can also come from anxiety attacks or many other illnesses. Before she forgets, she should list everything she had eaten in the two or three days before this attack, because she could be allergic. A person can develop an allergic reaction to something they were not allergic to, before.

Re: Numbness in hands and lips

All ERs are not created equal and all ERs are only as good as the best dr in each particular medical specialty who's available at that particular moment.

I agree that you should follow up on this situation.

Re: Numbness in hands and lips

in the ER, it's all in what you say. Say" I think I am having a heart attack" or "I think I am having a stroke", or "I can't breathe" and you will be taken in right away, ahead of everyone else. Triage in the ER leans toward these key, life-threatening events. It's not going to push you ahead with tingling in the lips and BOTH hands.
