I have a lot of pain to deal with.  I will not take prescription pain relievers or opiods.  So I use Aleve when my pain is worse than usual.  It takes the edge off, but that's about it.

I have taken ibuprofen in the past in large doses and wound up with high blood pressure, so I had to stop taking it.

Tylenol is useless for pain.

The other night I took a regular aspirin.  Just one.  And the pain was totally gone in 20 minutes.  I know one cannot take aspirin all the time because it thins the blood and can cause internal bleeding.  But there is no pain reliever like it.  It's thousands of years old and has many other benefits.  I wish I could take it every day.  It used to be the drug of choice for RA and I can understand why.

I'm so glad you got relief. You should make sure to take it with food @LilacTree. You might even consider the coated variety

@cherry

I do use the coated variety, 325 mg (I cut it in half).  Maybe I'll get a box of unsalted crackers and keep it in my nightstand so I can take aspirin during the night when the pain wakes me up.  First thing in the morning (after my Synthroid) would be a joy also.

I guess I should run this past my doctor, but I'm really tempted to use more aspirin.  The difference it made was almost like a miracle.

@LilacTree

I agree.  I wish I could take it more often.

Because of medical treatments, I’m not always able to take aspirin.

I have been cautioned about potential bleeding from ibuprofen and naproxen too.

(A former colleague of mine had a major bleeding internal problem from regular ibuprofen , she thought she was avoiding problems by taking it rather aspirin.)

Fortunately, Tylenol works for some of my headaches but, does little for any pain caused by inflammation. Ibuprofen does nothing for my headaches but, helps with back and shoulder pain.

Aspirin works best for me for both types.

I agree....wish i could take aspirin here and there...but because of medications...i am only able to take tylenol which does NOTHING........Also...my father had RA years

back and took aspirin all the time....he swore by it...but

you really have to be so careful......we came home one day to find him passed out on the sofa...got him to the hospital and they told him he was bleeding internally from the overuse of the aspirin....he had a big ulcer......after healing he only took it when he felt he had no choice....great med...but gotta be careful with continued use....

Yes, I know, that's why it's not recommended.  And I have many gastrointestinal issues and it would affect them also.  But it's so frustrating not to be able to take aspirin when it is so effective for pain!!

As we both know, Tylenol is useless for pain.  I don't even have it in the house.  My BP went back to normal after I stopped the ibuprofen.  And I don't take the Aleve often, maybe two to four tabs a week, and it doesn't do that much for me anyway.

Wish there was an answer!!

If you're cutting them in half you're exposing the contents, and not getting the benefit of using the coated variety.

OMG!  You're right!!  Well, I only did it once.  And I'll throw the other half away right now.

I took one 82mg coated aspirin for months after my first heart attack combined with Plavix. It nearly ruined my life with all the gastro-intestinal problems it gave me. I was living on Tums and antacids. When I was told to stop, within a few weeks my stomach issues resolved.

If if you have problems with eating and stomach pain @LilacTree, I would check with your physician regarding the use of aspirin as a painkiller.

@Trinity11

I know, Trin.  I'll probably not be able to use it because of what is already a totally messed up gastrointestinal system.  I will see the gastro doc next Friday.  He'll probably recommend a prescription pain killer, and that's not without its egregious side effects either, which is why I've always avoided it.  I don't think there's an answer for someone like me.  Maybe I'll do better when the warm weather returns.
