Re: New study on eye disease & supplements!

As I’m reading this I’m wondering why my surgeon that did my 45 minute Epi-Retinal eye surgery didn’t mention such an important supplement to me.

But after reading that a poster had an allergic reaction due to a shellfish allergy I’m guessing is the reason why.

Bummed that I can’t take it. 😔

Areds 2 has been the recommended brand for some years & I was advised to take it some time ago by retina doctor. It is available everywhere - groceries, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. I buy mine at grocery store on senior discount day with a coupon.

This is also from NIH:

There is mounting evidence that carotenoids may positively affect cognitive function through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, these compounds may act more specifically in the neural circuits by increasing neural efficiency or stabilizing lipid-protein structures in neuronal membranes.

@RescueLover

First, the allergic reaction was ONLY for supplements containing astaxanthin. Most do NOT. ONly that Lessman one I mentioned.

AREDS 2 does not have the shellfish.

Many eye care specialists with large health care organizations do NOT mention supplements, unless YOU bring it up.

Everyone needs zeaxanthin and lutein.

Off topic:

Not all medical specialists carefully inform patients of all care options. Not that they are not informed but for some reason supplements are not introduced. Maybe it's just my particular specialists?

Overwhelming evidence to support the use of Nicotinamide (not niacin) for pre-skin cancer lesions called AK. Husband has been a 10 year patient at a major university medical center with multiple moh's surgeries. Q to dermatologist: do you recommend Nicotinamide: A: oh yes. Me wonder: why have you never discussed this?

Just went to Endo for bone. Me: do you have a list of recommended supplements that I would need to take? PA: If you want all that this is not the place for you!

2 GI docs and neither ever recommended Probiotics. One recommended metamucil.

Me to cardiologist: Are there supplements that you recommend for cardio health? Doc: oh some are ok.

I have unilateral heaing loss. My ENT has NEVER given me a list of meds to avoid that can be ototoxic--one is aspirin.

I'm envious of those that say "I just check with my doctor"

[ Edited ]

Last week appointment with my optometrist no eye issues.

Andrew Lessman: Isn't a snake oil salesman.

His credentials are impressive. Callie, anniversary show shared his credentials: wow! He's not only a scientist, chemist, also attorney, and more. His commitment providing quality products with his responsibility towards the environment, also providing prenatal supplements for those not able affording prenatal care added reason my appreciation for all his contributions, and the upmost respect. Wish him all the best now and forever.

Good point, @granddi .  And it can happen within the same practice.  For years I was seeing the head doctor at the opthalmology practice.  He is much older and never mentioned the AREDS2 supplement, even though I have macular degeneration.  Then one year I saw one of the younger doctors for my annual checkup instead and he recommended the supplement.  After that I never booked the older doctor again.

Oh that’s good to hear!! Thanks for explaining that to me! @1Professor 🤗

I’m going to see if I can find it locally. I sometimes worry about ordering from Amazon if it’s not really what it says it is or it’s been tampered with or if it’s not made in the USA.

I have an appt this fall with a cataract specialist because the Epi Retinal surgery causes cataracts to start much earlier than most people have them.

I really appreciate you posting about this very important matter!! Our vision is priceless. 🤗🤗🤗

Question for You @1Professor

Do you know if I can I get that Bausch & Lomb Preservision ARED2 at my local pharmacy or Target or Walmart?
