Re: New Weight Watchers Program - Question

[ Edited ]

I don't do Weight Watchers but find this conversation interesting.

Is the reason hot chocolate is so poorly rated because it's mostly sugar with little nutritional value?

What snacks does Weight Watchers recommend with minimal points?

Why is a banana 0 points?  It has calories - at the end of the day, calories are what adds to pounds.

I joined the at-home program over the weekend but today is the first day I am tracking anything.  I am so confused with this tracker app right now. Actually, IMO the on-line version leaves a lot to be desired as far as explaining how the program actually works.  Maybe it's because I am used to attending a meeting that I am having a hard time with this.

Anyhow, I totally forgot that fruits are free along with most vegetables.  I just ate a banana and typed that into my tracker app on my phone.  After I did that I remembered that it should be free.  Yet the app computed 1 point for my banana.

Are only certain fruits free?

Just looked in my book to be sure, even bananas are 0.

Bananas are still 0 points. Its a good program and I like it.  The website is very, vry difficult to navigate. There are alot of complaints about it. There's an app called Smart Score that is the same calculator that WW uses to calculate smart points.  Its $1.99, but you need the nutritional information to calculate the points.  There are no food lists.

Well thank goodness it's not just me and the app.  LOL

Yesterday I got a real shocker as to the new points value of an occassional treat I used to have.  Every once in awhile I would get a honey bran raisin muffin from Dunkin Donuts.  They used to be 9 points way back when.  I looked it up yesterday and it's now 18 points! That's more than half of my daily points allowance.  No more muffins. Smiley Sad

Yeah, we're all getting some rude awakenings, but you know what? In the long run, I do believe we'll be healthier! No more raisins for me either.

I'm not joining at this time.  The reviews I read were just awful for the online plan.  Apparently the data isn't being stored.  I'll cross my fingers the tech people figure out what the issues are and fix them soon.

I think that's probably a wise choice.  I'm ready to call them and tell them to cancel my membership, refund my money and I'll join when they get the kinks worked out.

I think they'll get it fixed soon, since how would you like losing customers and handling all the complaints? ASAP I'm sure is on top of their to do list. In the meantime, it may not be as convenient until WW fixes it, but there is still paper and pencil. My way.Woman LOL

Edited to add: I believe in this way so much, that if all the ladies here who want to lose weight can just get by this temp inconvenience, and find another way to track, for now, will be winners in the end. Truly. Just my opinion, but in time, to fit into your clothes comfortably, and feel better health-wise because of weight loss, it's worth it. Not saying it cures all ills, of course.

Re: New Weight Watchers Program - Question

I never liked the online tracking tools or the app.  I am an old paper tracker from back in the day and started making my own tracker in Word when they messed up the really great trackers we had on Momentum.

That said, my understanding on why fruit has points in the tracker has to do with how you add it.  If you make it a meal or a recipe, it will add points.  If you add it as just a stand alone item, it should have 0 points.

WW spent a lot of time explaining their rationale about this.  It has to do with recipes and wanting to be consistent with all recipes by including the points for all ingredients for all recipes (WW recipes and non-WW recipes).

I now track on Sparkpeople.  I started tracking calories at the end of Momentum when I was at 18 points and could not get out of bed.  I was eating around 900 calories a day.  Eye opening.

I like tracking because it allows me to see my nutrient breakdown and what works for me for losing weight and maintaining.  If I want a good week, I can look back at a week where I lost 2 lbs and eat those things again and have another good week.

For me, it's good feedback and I'm glad WW got me in the habit of tracking.

Even though I do Primal Blueprint now, I still owe WW the foundation of all my good habits and putting me on this path.

With the new program all fresh and canned fruits are free even if used in a recipe or eaten as a meal.  If you blend them, they count as points.

Dried fruits are not free.  Starchy vegetables are not free such as peas, potatoes and legumes.

Hot chocolate is high in points because of the sugar.  They really raised the points on sugary foods and saturated fats.

As far as the website, it is messed up.  However my tracking works perfectly and that is all I need to do the program.

The only thing that has ever been messed up on mine is the community and recipe sections.  The rest works fine as far as tracking and looking up foods.  The food calculator works fine too.

My friend has a horrible time losing.  She is older and inactive and she lost 4.4 pounds on the new program the first week!

I'm a slow loser too, but I've lost 5.6 pounds in a month.  That isn't great but considering we had Chrismas and New Year's Eve (we ate out and partied) in there, it isn't too bad.

I love the new program.  Just give it a chance!!!

Re: New Weight Watchers Program - Question

Great weight loss MIMA.  I would join but I'm hoping to wait them out just a bit longer and really hope they get the website running properly.  Maybe I'll use myfitnesspal for a bit while I"m waiting although I would like to have the points guide WW offers.

I plan on going back soon but I'll be darned if I buy another food calculator.  I have two points plus calculators already so that I'd have one at home and one at work (one was included in something else I bought at a WW meeting).  I'm retired now so I have 2 sitting around the house.

I love WW but they can't expect people to restock every time they make a big change like this.

@Mmsfoxxie  You don't need a food calculator.  You can look up and track all your points online.  If you have a smartphone, you can also scan foods at the grocery store before you buy them so you know if they are point friendly or not.

I didn't buy anything this time around!  I thought it was great.

Re: New Weight Watchers Program - Question

Thanks for that info @mima.  I don't have a smart phone.  I might just do meetings next time around because I didn't really use my online priviledges before.  As a Lifetimer, after I reach goal again, I guess I'd have both, though.
