My annual exam is next Thursday, and I was planning on asking my doctor about it.  I got the first Shingles vaccine a year ago.  I'm pretty sure she will say I should get it.  I'm debating about whether I want to get it.  I won't ask her if I decide against it.  I definitely don't want Shingles.  I remember my grandmother having it, and it was awful.

In February, I asked our new primary doctor about it and he recommended holding off for a little while as it’s so new.

I had shingles when when I was 28. It was horribly painful but I only had one outbreak. I was lucky, but it was horrible.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

No.   I see commercials for the last one with lawyers ready to help victims.   I had it at 35 when I had melamoma.  The doctor said if I had come in right when I got it he had medication to stop it.   My son recently had shingles and his doctor stopped it in it's tracks.  I would rather go that route.

I had a fairly rough reaction to my first - and only so far -shot!  Had a really sore arm with a big, red, swollen lump. Reaction lasted around 2 weeks.  Will wait for to see what reactions others are getting to the new shot!!

You are talking about the first shingles vaccine - there is a new one that only uses the DNA from the virus.

I had a mild (but painful) bout of shingles 12 years ago.  I got old vaccine about five years ago and will begin the new one in June (want to get 6 weeks after second cataract surgery).  This one is much more effective and I definitely don't want another round of Shingles!

My Dr. mentioned it the last time I saw him, but said it's only covered by Medicare right now if I got it at a pharmacy & not if I got it in-office, which is where I got the regular shingles shot a few years back.  I think it's called the Shingrix vaccine. I saw a sign about it at Costco's pharmacy, which is where I get most of my Rxs filled.  I think I'll wait on getting it.

The new shingles vaccine does not contain a live virus; the old one does:

"But because the new shingles vaccine contains a nonliving viral particle, it may ultimately be deemed appropriate for those with compromised immunity. (Zostavax contains live—although weakened—herpes zoster virus, so those with significantly weakened immune systems should not receive it.) The ACIP will review data on Shingrix in these groups as it becomes available."

@NickNack, I am in the same situation as you...got the first vaccine last year and wondered about getting the new one.  My yearly isn't until June.  Please report back what your doctor says, and if you think of it, please tag me.  Thanks if you can!
