I have absolutely no experience or knowledge of anything to do with yoga, so am looking for some advice. I've already ordered a few DVDs and a mat, but looks like I'm supposed to also get a strap. I don't want to put a lot of money into this until I see if I like doing yoga, so I'm not looking to buy an expensive brand. I've found two affordable straps at our local retailers--one with the metal D ring and the other with the plastic cinch buckle. Am just wondering which is better to use, or does it make any difference at all. Thanks for any help.

I use the kind that doesn't have any hardware like this:
I paid less than $15 for mine on amazon.

There's a great selection on Amazon but I agree with you on putting money into it until you are sure you'll stick with it. You could, for now, use a rolled up hand towel or nothing at all.

I take classes at the gym and have never heard of using a strap.

PTs recommend them for stretching your legs. You can buy them at Target.

We occasionally use straps in my Yoga classes. We use them for arm and leg stretches. We use them to move our arms and legs in stretches we could not otherwise accomplish.

When I need one I use the type with the metal ring. You may need to consider blocks at first too.

I'm in PT now for my neck and am using them for my upper back/neck strengthening exercises. I just never have used it in relation to yoga.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Saw quite a few on Amazon, as SilleeMee and Woodie mentioned, but the ones I considered required a minimum $25 purchase to get free shipping. The cheapest ones I found were at Walmart and Meijer's (one has the metal D ring, the other has the plastic buckle). The plastic one is actually the cheapest, but I am concerned that it might break easily. Think I'll try and find one like SilleeMee recommended. Looks like a good option.
