Last year I broke two toes and then the nail on one toes started to disintegrate so I went to the poditrist.

She trimmed and smoothed out the nail with a dremel like tool.  Fastforward, the nail is growing oddly...not flat like the other nails.

To get in to see her is 2 months out - any suggestions?

I am not adoctor , but I had to study diseases and conditions of the nails for my cosmotology state exam for my license....hair, skin and nails.

If you damaged the nail matrix, the nail could grow in wonky and distorted.  If that is what happned, you will have to live with it or have the entire nail removed permanently for a more pleasing appearance.

Lots of people have damaged finger or toe nails.  I am sure your doctor will tell you if the nail damage is permanent.  Just wear comfortable shoes in the meantime that don't rub your toes.

@Carmie ...

I know there are much worse issues to endure.  I'll keep the appointment I made and see what she has to say.   Did I understand correctly..once the nail is removed it does not come back?!  Thank you

Can you get in sooner to your family dr.?  Maybe they can do something. Although I've found anymore all family drs. do is refer you to specialists but you never know.

@Mom2Dogs

I have had several broken toes, including both big toes. None of them damaged the nails as you described. About 2 years ago I had surgery on my Left Big toe. My Ortho Surgeon removed the nail and a part of the underlying tissue. My nail is growing in fine.

From my running decades, I had more Black Toenails(blood under the nail) than I can remember. Partly due to my Left foot being 1 Full Size Smaller than my Right Foot.

You run distance/your foot sweats/sock gets wet/slides in the shoe/longer toes keep hammering into the Toe Box. Result? Blood under the toenails.

Unless you have had 1, or slammed the tip of a finger in a door/window etc, it's hard to describe the pain. The blood puts pressure on the nail, and even blowing air on it hurts like he!!.

On every Black Toe, I stuck a hot needle through the toenail, that releases the blood, along with the pressure. On every toe that was Black, I eventually lost the toenails.

Now some of them have never grown back like the original nail. Both big toes grew back normal, even with the surgery, them being black several times.The smaller toes are where very few ever grew back in a normal fashion. My Podiatrist from decades ago told me this might happen.

He is also the one that showed me how to puncture my toenail with a very hot needle, toe get the blood out from under the nails. He showed me on a visit to him because of that issue.

Summary! Only suggestion I have for you! Ask your Podiatrist when you see her. My results were as stated above.

@hckynutjohn ...quite the ordeal with your toes!  I am not sure which I would prefer no nail or a wonky nail!

Take a photo and send it to your podiatrist. She'll tell you what to do.

It depends.  The doctor can remove the nail so that it will not grow back, or just pop the nail off and it will grown back.  There are many people who have a toenail removed pernanently.

If the matrix is injured, often the nail will never grow out right.  It will always look wonky.  Some people have the nail removed permanently rather than deal with rubbing and shoes not fitting correctly over that toe.

@hckynutjohn   I  shut a car door on my right thumb and the doctor drilled a hole in my nail to release the blood the pressure with a large needle heated with a match.

I learned rather quickly not to do that again. Ouch. My nail grew out normal, but the end of my thumb is deformed a little.

One of my thumb nails is distorted from an old injury. It grows uneven and it's thicker on one side. I use a nail-sanding tool to flatten and even it out so it looks half decent. I have to use polish on it to cover the discoloration, too. pita.
