Re: NFL News and Notes for May 2014!!!

I'm really happy for you...you have been posting about them all season!

There's NOTHING like making it to the Stanley Cup...good luck!

My ex is on the Cup...he won in his first year up with the Bruins....MANY years ago!

He made it to the finals twice more with 2 other teams...but he always says it's like lightening and rarely strikes the same place twice!

Re: NFL News and Notes for May 2014!!!

Well, it turns out Kaepernick's deal may not be as good as it first sounded for Kaepernick and a whole lot better for the Niners. Apparently due to the various conditions in the deal, the Niners are only on the hook for around $13 million in absolutely, positively guaranteed money and then have until April first of each year to decide whether to keep the deal or let Kaepernick go. Kaepernick also apparently has to buy, out of pocket, a $20 million dollar iunsurance policy payable to the Niners in case he gets injured.

It sure sounded like Kaepernick got a great deal when you heard just the raw numbers, and while he's far from poor, unless he really excels he's not likely to see most of that money. If he's lucky, he may see $30-$40 million of the reported $126 million. That's not bad money, but it's not $126 million.

Re: NFL News and Notes for May 2014!!!

Is it unusual to require players to buy such expensive insurance policies? I've never heard it mentioned before. I figured that they would have some kind of health insurance that the NFL provides, but the 20 million dollar policy in case of injury sounds strange. There are so many players getting inured lately that maybe other teams are doing the same thing and I didn't even know about it.

Two months until pre season. That's not very far away. Football will be back before we know it.

Teganslaw. I'd never heard of it before. I found it odd that the player had to pay for the policy that benefitted the Niners.

Re: NFL News and Notes for May 2014!!!

TEGAN AND GARDENMAN--I know Joe Theismann had purchased his own insurance through Lloyds of London 2 years before his injury, he did it in case something happened to end his career---and luckily he had it. The amount he took out was 1 mill (peanuts compared to today's salaries)....and it required him to make every possible effort to return to play before he could collect. This was way back in 1983 and he got hurt in 1985.

Theismann was saved from possible problems that may often plague others in pro sports who are forced to retire due to injury. He listened to advice given him by Redkins owner Jack Kent Cooke. When Cooke first signed Theismann to a deal, he handed him a business card from a Lloyd’s of London representative and he urged Theismann to take out an insurance policy that could at least pay off part of the contract if he was injured. Cooke also told Theismann not to deduct the cost of the premium on his tax return. That meant that if he was injured, he would not have to pay taxes on the settlement if the policy paid off. Theismann took the advice and got a policy. It ultimately paid him $1.5 million.

Hey TEGAN wonder what Colin K's contract deal means to Andrew Luck, RG3's and Russell Wilson once their rookie cap has expired....a bit scary to think about in terms of numbers and cap space!

Re: NFL News and Notes for May 2014!!!

SPURT. Yeah, pretty much every pro player and many college players buy insurance policies in case they get injured, but the weird thing with this one is that the Niners get the money if he gets hurt. In every other case I've ever heard of the policy is to protect the player and provide future income for him if he gets hurt. To have a team force a guy to buy a specific policy ($20 million in this case) to protect the team should he get hurt is different. Some teams will buy contract insurance on their own to protect them if a star player gets hurt, but making the player buy the policy and name the team the beneficiary is unusual and possibly unique.

GARDENMAN- Your right, I did not know if things had changed from back in the 80's and if perhaps this was a new trend to name the team as beneficiary ...... well Colin K. signed the contract, but if I was his agent I would have told him not agree and contacted the Players Association about it too...it seems weird!

Pro Football Focus, ranked the NFL Rosters. The New York Giants roster came in at No. 19 in the NFL and No. 3 in the NFC East, behind the No. 5 overall Eagles and right behind the No. 18 overall Cowboys. And they went on to say that even though the Giants filled roster spots-----no one scares you---and thats from people that know the team....But WOW GARDENMAN---your Eagles seem ready to make some noise! We will have to see how this all fairs out once they play the games, but interesting nonetheless.

SPURT. Yeah things look pretty good for the Eagles right now. We're one of the younger teams in the league with good depth at most positions. We've got a good coaching staff and nearly all of the players came back fitter and faster than they were last year. The local press has been very impressed by the practices they've seen.
