@lgfan wrote:Why did you schedule the test so late in the morning? When I get blood drawn I usually schedule it no later than 8:00 a.m.
I always make appt for 1pm so it's first appt after lunch. I don't get up til 9 or so. Since my appt is so late by the time I eat I'm eating dinner. The doctor asked me if I was hungry. I don't like to eat after 6 or 7 at the latest.

Fasting for 12 hours means no nutrition for 12 hours and that includes any liquids other than water.

I also schedule my blood draws for around 1 PM so I can drink all morning and be very hydrated otherwise getting blood from me is like getting it from a brick!!

I heard a new one, this time. The lab lady told me to fast before the blood test-only water and black coffee. Wooo-hoooo. I could care less about breakfast but coffee makes it all good!!! I drink it black, anyway.

I heard that you can also drink tea by itself, no cream or sugar.

Coffee and tea contain caffeine and that can interfere with some blood tests but not many. Caffeine is also a diuretic so that can interfere with certain electrolytes. Limit caffeine intake before blood collection times.
I'm a retired lab tech and I know what I'm talking about.

I do the walk in at the local hospital. They open at 6:30 a.m. I'm usually the only one there and have never had anyone ahead of me.

If your appointment is at 11:30 AM you would need to start your fasting time no later than 11:30 PM.....according to by calculations that's 12 hours....and yes you can have water...

Quotes from drs. I have heard about test I've had:
Just don't eat a big sandwich right before you go to bed.
It's not what you ate yesterday, it's what you've been eating for months that shows up.
