@twinkieswrote:o sorry that you are in such pain , Have you been tested for sjogrens syndrome?
Cathy from ma
@twinkies No, I haven't been tested for sjogrens. Since I clench my teeth and have TMJ it's much more likely that that's the cause. I'll mention this to my doctor on Thursday though.

Haven't been online in a while and just saw this posting. I need to reply cause I have had my mouth stuck open. It is very painful to say the least. Mine resulted when I tried to open my mouth to eat a hamburger. I was unable to talk, my nose starting running, drooling to the mamaxx and extremely painful. This happened in a Sunday night so nothing was open . Luckily my dentist lived nearby so my hubby called him I couldn't imagine going to an emergency room in this condition my eyes were crying too making me a horrible mess!!!! Anyway my dentist told hubby over the phone how to massage my cheeks and face at the jaw line to help out my jaw back in line. That worked for me. Had to see the dentist the first thing next morning. He diagnosed it as TMJ and set up an appointment to see a specialist 100 miles away. This was at a time when TMJ was unknown and just beginning to be reported in our newspapers. I had to fight to get insurance coverage! What a nightmare! This specialist recommended surgery as the disk in my jaw joint was moved outside the joint preventing it from opening and closing normally. Within a short time insurance claimed it was a medical condition and approved surgery. That was back in 1983. Other than having limited ability to open my mouth fully, There is no pain it was finally determined that the cause was directly attributes to the removal of my wisdom tooth! Sorry for such a long posting. It only took 12 years to get my resolution to an issue that started when I was nineteen and unknown diagnosis. Granted it didn't stick open until toward the end but no one has a solution before then.
Good Luck!

@nagrom Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds much worse than mine. I'm glad you had a good resolution. Mine became unstuck in 2 1/2 hours, but it still isn't exactly right. I've been taking 800 mg a day for a week and a half. I go back to the oral surgeon on Thursday.

Back in 2002, I woke up in the middle of the night with my jaw locked shut! Awful, I was scared to death. I remember looking on the computer to see whether I needed to see a dentist or a doctor. Luckily, somehow I was able to get a few hours sleep that night and the next morning, it was slightly opened. My dentist got me in that afternoon and I ended up having to get a custom bite plate.

@morganjen What is a custom bite plate? Is that like a splint or night guard to wear at night? The oral surgeon said we are going to do a mold for one when I go in on Thursday.

@NickNackYes, that's what it is.

My jaw has slipped again. It's been two months since the first time. I had my teeth cleaned today. I didn't feel like I had to open my mouth too wide, but that's probably what did it. It's not as bad as the first time though. I hope it will work itself out on its own. If not, I'll have to get the ibuprofen filled again. It's for 800 mg. three times a day for two weeks.

Thank you @Bird mama. It's not nearly as bad this time. Hopefully it will get better on its own. I did just take some ibuprofen for swelling though.

When you go to the dentist in the future, especially if you are having work, you need to ask them for a bite prop.
Also, you might want to take ibuprofen a few hours before your visit.
