@sfnative, I am now actively looking, but I plan to meet with her for the discussion.  We have been together a long time and I think that she deserves to hear it instead of read it.  I am so glad that I got a second opinion, but I am concerned about who else was mis-diagnosed.  Thanks.

@SXMGirl

Good luck with the talk.

After having attempted a "talk" with one physician, I have "fired" 3 physician in intervening years.  Don't get me wrong, I'm probably a lot older than you, don't suffer fools at all, am retired from extraordinarily varied nursing experiences and appreciate a good doc when I find one.

The attempt to speak with my neuro-of-record at the time in SoCal turned into a circus.  Went in to speak with him and as soon as I opened my mouth, BINGO, he whipped out his laptop and started taking down everything I said verbatim.  It was clear he was doing this should he received notification of suit from me for mal practice.  At this point, I stood up, told him my appointment and relationship with him ceased and walked out.

I really can not understand how these two conditions could possibly be mistaken for each other. Lichen Sclerosis causes white, shiny( sometimes called porcelain ) skin changes and yeast infections cause red dark skin changes. They are kind of the opposite of each other in appearance.

I agree.  There is a HUGE piece of the puzzle missing here.

A woman I go to the gym with was not feeling well and was having trouble breathing.  She was being treated for bronchitis and then pneumonia and was on a variety of medications.  Her HMO did not allow for xrays or CT scans because of the initial diagnosis.

She was home sick one day watching the tv show The Doctors and they were describing various heart conditions and she said they described exactly what she was feeling. She made an appointment with a cardiologist and she ended up having bypass surgery.

Re: My Family Doctor Rant

[ Edited ]

@SXMGirlYour family doctor, no matter how many years you have been a patient is not your friend. He/she is someone you have hired to solve a problem you are not capable of solving. You pay him/her to fix a problem, that's all. You would be wise to get a new doctor, and when your new doctor sends the release form for your records, your "old" doctor will know that there has been a change. Why your doctor wouldn't run tests to prove you either right or wrong about your diagnosis, I don't know. Maybe she really thought it was a different problem, or it could have just been a "bad day" for her. But to allow you to suffer for months was wrong. You don't owe her an explanation, and if you keep the next appointment, you do realize that you will be paying her to give her a piece of your mind, don't you? If you really want to get your point across, then sit down and write her a letter, but paying her to listen to you just isn't right. You don't owe her anything. She was the one that was wrong. My doctors charge over $100.00 for the 15 minutes they allow for my appointments, is it worth you paying her that much just so you can tell her off?

Why would anybody go to a primary care doc for a yeast infection.  Ever hear of an OB/GYN?  You should have been there.

It might depend on the insurance you carry.  For certain plans, you need a referral to a gyn for anything other than you annual well woman exam, so she would have had to go to her primary first to get the referral and the primary would need to try to treat it first before authorizing the referral.

Doctor's don't practice medicine anymore, insurance companies do.

I am so angry that I am fairly sure that I will be leaving my family doctor of almost 18 years over a mis-diagnosis.

Last summer, I saw her about what I thought was a yeast infection.  My doctor assured me that I was wrong and that what I had was lichen sclerosus.  Unfortunately, it can spread anywhere there is soft tissue, which mine did on my stomach, and it can turn into cancer in some cases.  It is not curable.

The pain has been unbearable since November, but she assured me that at some point, with the meds, that it would get better.  Since I research everything, I got on every site that I could and also checked meds.  Last week I was in such pain that I sought out a specialist.

Today was my specialist appointment and I do not have lichen sclerosus but I do have a terrible yeast infection that she told me would have to be biopsied if it was not better when I saw her again in two weeks.  Well, after one pill and three difference cream applications, I am already pain free and the infection looks to be almost gone. I am still livid.

I will be seeing my family doctor again in September when I get my next set of blood work done.  At that point, she and I will be having quite a conversation.  I know that she was unhappy in the practice where she was at for the past 5 years, but that really is no excuse.  As I told the specialist today, I thought that my regular doctor just was not interested.   I really do not know how to even put this nicely to her.  Luckily, I am not seeing her this week.

I really hate to change doctors, but I am not sure if I will ever have confidence in her again.  Anyone think that I am over-reacting to this situation?  I definitely welcome all opinions.  Thanks.

@SXMGirl   I would never put up with something that long.  I also would NEVER see a PCP for any vaginal infections.  PCP's today are stupid.   I always go to a specialist.

I am sorry this happened to you but to ME.... SHE IS A DONE DEAL...... Your life was spared can you imagine if this was more life threatening.

NO MY DEAR, I would be searching for a new doctor NOW!!!

My local hospital has a physicans referral line where you can speak to nurses and explain what you are looking for.  I look for doctors who are also teaching or dean or intern leaders so these doctors to ME are more up to date on all the new medications.

BUT I live in a larger city so we have HUNDREDS of doctors.  Also I have switched doctors so I don't understand the need to even talk about what happened, just GO TO A NEW DOCTOR.  end of story.

Well, consider all your options and I wish you LUCK in finding a new doctor.

About a decade ago my cousin was misdiagnosed with bronchitis. They treated her for a year. It was lung cancer. Her daughters won a malpractice lawsuit. At the same time, my second cousin had brain cancer.  They put the results in her chart but didn't tell her for a long time.

WOW...

I would want to know if I had braid cancer, how long did they wait to tell her and did she survive?  That is terrible.

@SXMGirl  Change doctors!  This is why it is said to get several medical opinions, so sick of hearing about misdiagnosis.  I had a misdiagnosis by my previous primary, three days later in such pain I could barely breathe, I saw another doctor as she was not in, this doctor ordered the correct lab tests, the other didn't, and by the next day I was in the hospital for three days.  I now see the second doctor.  The previous had been inept twice before causing me such suffering, so after this, I was more than done with her.
