I wish to add some thoughts to my previous post. I have first and foremost relied on faith over mind. Yes, mind has been a close second, but faith has always been first.
I have been called on in this life to be a long term caregiver for several family members. I just could not allow myself to become sick. As I said, I did not have any life threatening illnesses or injuries during this time of 40 years. I did, however, face many debilitating illnesses and injuries. I fought like all-get-out to get myself well so I could take of others.
Prayer was huge! My other meds were vinegar for UTIs (sometimes took many months to resolve), ice and compression for various body parts, all the sleep I could get here and there.
Today, at 73, and finally under the care of a primary care internist, I am on no medications and my labs continue to check out in good shape.
That all took some mighty powerful faith. I do not recommend my methods to anyone else.
I thoroughly would put my trust in conventional medicine for things I cannot address on my own.

I'm surprised this topic is not getting more conversation and testimonials. I would like very much to hear them.

If one has any particular goals, be it time and/or distance, specifically both! They can tell you that at many points of those challenges, your body says "QUIT", but you keep on. How/Why?
Again, read the title of this thread. No successful long distance athlete can reach their goals without knowing, your Body and your Mind, have to work in concert with each other, or you will never get to whatever goal(s) you have set for yourself.
Same with recovering from serious physical setbacks like injuries, or life threatening illnesses. I have been through many of both, and had I not been an optimist? There is absolutely no way I would have made it back to my pre-event physical fitness levels. Once again, your body says "QUIT", but your mind says "I WON'T".
Anyone that believes there is no Mind/Body Connection, in all facets of living life?
Good luck, because your days will seem like weeks/months and years, not days!

I wonder how much "self help" will work if you have something like appendicitis? I did; it burst and if I hadn't had surgery (i.e., invasive procedure) I would have died.
There's some things that "self help" just won't work for.

This entire concept is not applicable to all disease processes. My girlfriend decided with good thoughts and alternative medicine her breast cancer would be healed. She died at the age of 32.
Same thing happened to Steve Jobs. He didn't want his body "desecrated" (or some such term) by cancer surgery, so he died instead.

@GoneButNotForgotten, It is not an either/or topic. Even when undergoing conventional medical treatments, the mind is a strong healing component and should never be disregarded.

I pretty much spelled out what you mention here, of course in my style, which is a whole lot more words. It is not an either/or topic, but @GoneButNotForgotten seems to want to make it seem as such.
If you go back and read my last post previous to this one. It details exactly what I have been saying on this forum for over 20+ years. After my explanation of my feelings, coupled with my several life/death experiences! I will quote the response from @GoneButNotForgotten to my post: "well wasn't that special".
The Mind/Body are ONE! They are not separate entities that work best when they do not work together, quite the opposite. For some unknown reason that particular poster wants to separate the 2 from one another. Why?
Maybe they can explain it to you, because that person made it clear to me they have no interest in my opinion, based on my own experiences of needing both working together to still be alive to type this response.
Thank you for trying to explain it once again to someone that seems to believe it is an either/or choice, when it is not.

Clearly, @hckynutjohn , that poster who made disparaging remarks has some other issues going on. I think this is an important topic. That is why I gave my personal insight.
It seems that lately especially, posting on this forum goes for the jugular in hasty posts that are meant to fly back and forth furiously, with little to no real meaning.

Some of the things I do to increase the mind/body connection are:
This is discussed in many places and it really has made a huge change in me. I severely limit my daily news intake.
I severely limit my celebrity knowledge base. Most of it is immoral, at best trashy and seems to advocate desires of the flesh that I think are best kept in the bedroom.
I have had to curtail my reality show watching. At one time I thought it was harmless. I now know it is insidious.
I give dedicated time each day to my faith. Of course, some days I falter, but I try to get back on the path asap.
By following the above practices, I have especially noticed an improvement in sleep. This proves to me that much of the stuff we allow into our brains that seems innocuous is actually damaging our physical health.

Okay, this may be my best advice ever for injuries just shy of doctors' care, and maybe a little beyond....
Ice, ice, ice--immediate and continuous. I had a serious rotator cuff injury from a fall. I know I should have gone to a doctor, but it was at the height of covid and I decided to stay home and treat myself.
I live alone, so it was okay for me to scream out loud when I had to move my arm and shoulder. I used ice, compression and arm slings (bought from Amazon, a shoulder compression sling and a separate arm sling).
I even picked @hckynutjohn 's brain. To his credit, he recommended professional care. I am a tough bird, though and knew I could stick with home care. Physical rehab was critical.
I researched online physical rehab exercises for rotator cuff injuries and stuck with them daily. It took many months for a full recovery, and I am very satisfied with the results.
Today I have full range of motion in said shoulder and arm. I do not recommend this for anyone but myself.
