Mine were hormonal and I was lucky because I went thru the change around age 40. I tried injectables a couple times, but had trouble doing that  plus at the time they were pricey ( going back 30  years ago, now.).  My issues were terrible nausea and eye pain.So I did have them for awhile after and then they quit. I must say though that now I get nasty tension headaches that seem just as bad.

I don't think mine are hormone-related, as I have had them before and after the change. I've had tension headaches for days, so my sympathies because they didn't stop until I was able to lower my stress (job).

@Icegoddess  Tramadol can cause a racing heart! It's very serious. I am glad you haven't tried them, again.

Re: Migraines: what kind do you get? How do you prevent? How do you get relief?

I used to get terrible migraines. The kind where you would be in bed for an entire day in a dark room. Terrible nausea, that weird feeling and throbbing pain only a migraines understands. Mine were mainly hormonal but I did have other triggers like the weather, certain foods, too little or too much sleep, and stress.

I used a triptan to abort my migraines which helped some of the time. I also take Topamax.  I experienced some small side effects from Topamax in the beginning but when you have that kind of pain, believe me those side effects are nothing. I have been on the medication for years now with no ill effects.

what has helped me improve my frequency of migraines has been a combination of things. I have used acupuncture and reflexology. Warming my hands and feet when I feel a headache is coming on helps. I am very sensitive to odors so I use aromatherapy too.

I had a good endocrine work up as well. Some of my migraines were triggered by flunctuations in my blood sugar. I was borderline diabetic. Getting that under control helped.

I never drink red wine or eat foods with nitrates or MSG. Those almost surely will predispose to migraines.  Fermented food also can give me issues. Everyone is different so you may need to find your triggers.

And finally, there is one really good thing about getting older. The frequency of migraines tends to lessen as you age.

I hope you find things that work for you. Wishing you wellness and less migraines!

Also, my husband just takes the Mg citrate form. They may recommend a different or more effective form nowadays, not sure.

Re: Migraines: what kind do you get? How do you prevent? How do you get relief?

I have had migraines my whole life.  I am 61.  When I was younger and options were limited, I would wake up with one and throw up all day until the migraine went away.  My doctor put me on birth control pills because I had very painful periods and that actually helped my migraines.

Fast forward to today.  I now take Topamax twice a day as a blocker.  Although it is usually prescribed as an anti-seizure medication, it has been very successful at blocking the onset of migraines.  I rarely get what I call a "head banger" any more.  When I feel one coming on during the day, I take part of an Imitrix pill.  I actually cut my pills in half.  I don't need a whole one.  Depending on the strength, they can really make you feel wonky while they are working and you will need to lie down.  They usually work.  If it is a really bad headache, I give myself an Imitrex shot.  That always does the trick.   When I am sick and throwing up, the shot stops the headache and the nausea.  But, if you have any heart issues, you can't take the shot.  It does make your heart race.

If I have a regular headache, I will take Excedrin Migraine like many of the others have suggested.

I hope you find something that helps.  Migraine headaches in any form can really take a toll on your life.  Take care.

I wonder if Zomig or Imitrix will help with no pain.

@Squirrels Are Trash  NOPE!  Both control "pain."  Sinc you have severe nausea w/your painless migraines, ask your treating physician about "Promethazine.

When I first started seeing my migraine specialist, she asked me if I had nausea w/my migraines.  I told her no but, I do have severe nausea when flying & cruising.  She prescribed Promethazine (low dosage) 12.5 mg.  That dosage worked like a charm for me.  Sounds like you may need 25 mg which is the 2nd highest.

Your migraine treating physician a neurologist?

No, it's been a serious of PCPs. I am going to look into promethazine. Thank you!

@GingerHead

I had a PCP tell me that mixing 2 Tylenol with one 1 Ibuprofin and take with an icy cold full sugar coke would cure migraine pain (which I don't have)—something to do with mixing the meds.

Thanks for the info on Magnesium; I will look into it further!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It's not surprising that they are the resulting symptoms from other health issues like pre-diabetes. Alcohol is one of my triggers also.

I need to find a medical professional willing to do more (or any) testing. My old PCP thought he knew everything. He told me if I don't have pain, It's not a migraine. That's false. I ubered myself to his office while I was in migraine so he could watch me throw up in his waiting room, examining room, bathroom, etc. That's when he prescribed the Zofran.

Everyone on this thread has generously shared info, RX, and possible cures.

@Squirrels Are Trash  Check the phone book and/or online for "migraine clinics" in your town or for a neurologist that specializes in migraines.

There a very active migraine message boards w/loads of info.  Suggest you look into them and/or join.
