Hello.  I found a menopause forum for women only about 10 years ago; I think somebody posted it in here.  I'm having a horrible time at night, especially going to bed.  I get so hot, I have to turn on the air down to 60.

It's not flashes; it pretty much stays hot except that my limbs and head are cold, so I'm freezing and boiling at the same time.  Would appreciate some helpful suggestions.  I've read everything and my doctor is on vacation.

TIA.

I don't have any suggestions but I sympathize. I think about half of my life is a hot flash.

I get off and on hot flashes.   They are intense and then go away as fast as they came on.

I do get hot at night.   I fall asleep easily, but wake up constantly throughout the night.  I have a lot of emotional things going on in my life, so my mind never shuts off at bedtime.

I got a little fan at Walgreens that runs on batteries.  I have it at my desk and by my bed.   It helps a lot.

I have the weirdest things going on, probably menopause related.  I'm tired all the time, yet I can be active.  I think a lot of mine is from depression.

I have a dry mouth and dry eyes.   (Pretty much dry everywhere - if you get my drift).    My hair actually looks better and healthier and I'm way overdue for a haircut.   My breasts are fuller and I have cleavage where I never had before.   I thought that all goes away at  menopause?  I also have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night when I never did a year ago.   Ugh!

And don't even go there with the stomach bloat!   Where the heck did that come from?   I'm athletic and thin, but my tummy is extended a lot. I do eat a lot of fiber, drink with a straw a lot and eat too fast. I know that can lend itself to belly bloat.   I do take probiotics, but I am so self conscious about it.

I'm not taking anything for my symptoms.  I do take fish oil for my eyes and use Biotene for the mouth.   They wanted to put me on anti-depressants but I refused.

I wish I had an answer for your symptoms.   Just drink a lot of liquids and exercise when you can.

You're not alone.   I'm so sick of having to have had a period for my adult life and then having to deal with this.   Golden years?   Do they exist?

Have you done a google search for message boards? I'm sure there are plenty who at least read the posts, if not contribute.

There are supplements that do help. You should ask your doctor if it would be ok for you to take these. I took a supplement (my OBGYN looked at it and said ok) that included a blend.  It got me through, but my medical history is WAY different than anyone else's.

A tip. Use a water bottle with frozen water wrapped up in a tee.  Hold it up next to you while you sleep.

I have fans by the bed also.  Bamboo/cotton bedding. And I have two  light-weight blankets so I can pile both or one or neither on/off. My butt and feet are always cold so lots of times, I'll have all the blankets up to my waist, but wrap my sheet so that my back is exposed to the cooling air.

What about a hat or headband or scarf to keep your head warmer? I use a c-pap machine so it's easy for me to sleep w/my head covered.

For some reason, I struggle with the idea of wearing socks to bed. LOL - it's a quirk.

Re: Menopause forum??

[ Edited ]

I know many women have had good results with over the counter products, but they never worked for me.

At 50, I started with serious hot flashes, etc., and began my search for relief.  Found a doctor who prescribed bioidentical hormones that were compounded for me based on results of blood tests.

That combo of creams and an estrogen patch were the only things that ever worked for me.  No weight gain, no hot flashes, even moods, slept great.

Last year, I stopped taking everything after having a complete hysterectomy and discovery of a uterine tumor.

Thankfully, it had not spread.   I know hormones are controversial and many women won't touch them, but I miss them and how I felt.  My skin and hair stayed healthy and glowing and I don't think I aged as much had I not taken them.

Still get hot flashes a bit, but not as bad as when I was younger.

Going back is not an option, but I'm not sorry I took them when I did.  I cannot imagine having been miserable all those years!

Good luck in finding something that helps you.

I don't get hot flashes, but my bedroom has always been hot (since it was build in 1993 and all year long) due to the fact that I have a cathedral ceiling and all the heat in the house migrates there.  It sounded like a good idea when I bought the house and added that option.  I'll never get one again, though.  LOL

I had a ceiling fan installed over my bed, but that doesn't seem to work well.  I've had to switch to a traditional fan.  The horizontal air flow works better in there.  I also turn on the fan for my central HVAC, which helps keep the air moving around at night.

For other menopause symptoms like energy and depression, I've found that a LOT of B Complex helps with immediate relief of the waves of sadness I get (and I have always had these waves of sadness every month, even when on BCPs, they just were not as intense since going off BCPs).

For energy, I've found Andrew Lessman's Ultimate Women's Wellness to be a blessing.  I started this on the day I stopped BCPs and took it for 90 days.  I didn't know if it was helping, so I switched to AL's Positive Passage and immediately didn't feel well at all.  It took me a few months to realize the difference so I switched back to UWW and immediately felt better.

All mine started when I was around 40 or so. I don't have any of the hot flashes or night sweats. I'm still using Emerita bioidentical progesterone cream & take EPO (evening primrose oil). I was doing pretty good up until about 4 months ago or so. I thought I was finished with all this. Now I'm having the headaches, mood swings, irritability, emotional symptoms back which I hate. They make me a terrible person which I'm not.

@kutira*****That's always how I've gotten hot or cold, in areas.

Sorry, I'd like to help, but I missed the "Big M" because I had a complete hysterectomy and am happily on HRT.
