I take 1 mg melatonin a night, which I think is the smallest dose, but not positive.
I take it about an hour before going to bed.
I also occasionally drink tart cherry juice.
Most nights, I fall asleep fine. I really have not had a bad night in a long time.
But I do have crazy dreams sometimes, kind of like "awake nightmares" that someone mentioned. Usually someone in the room, or a giant bug!!
I've had that kind of problem re: crazy dreams most of my life. I really didn't attribute it to melatonin. Is that a proven connection??

About a year in a half ago I was working weird hours at my second job. I was getting about 3-4 hrs of sleep a night even on my off days from my 2nd job. I put it off talking to my doctor. Finally I did and I told her that I wanted to start slow and she agreed. I wanted a narcotic med to be the last resort. She also agreed.
I tried 5-6 different meds like Vistaril, Trazadone and a few others. Trazadone made me feel really off and my head felt heavy and like it was floating. None of the others worked and being a nurse I tried them most of them for 3-4 weeks except for the Trazadone.
I now take Ambien 6.25mg every night with 10 mg of Melatonin. I know it sounds like a lot, but that's what works for me. I don't feel groggy and I feel well rested. I don't work weird hrs anymore. The thing that changed the most is, when I would get home from my regular job at 3:30 I would be beat and would have to lay down. Now that I get quality sleep at night, I no longer feel wore out.

Melatonin isn't a sleeping pill; it's a hormone. It won't knock you out, it relaxes you and puts you in the mood to fall asleep. But if you fight it or do things after taking it that counteracts the "window to let yourself get drowsy", it won't do a thing. It's easy to take too much and get backlash/backfire symptoms.
At best it would let me relax to the point of beginning drowsiness. It never let me stay asleep all night, and I would often wake in the wee hours "wired" instead of sleepy - this was a pronounced effect for me.
I now sometimes use a spray-on melatonin called Sprayable Sleep. It's better at giving you enough melatonin without too much. But it still will only make me slightly drowsy - it doesn't "put you" to sleep and any old thing may wake you.

@piperbay wrote:@halfpint1 I am taking tart cherry pills and they are a source of natural melatonin. I take three a day. When I tried the regular melatonin supplement, it just made me groggy in the morning. Very happy with the tart cherry.
At bedtime I also take Passionflower lozenges and some chewable L-Theanine. Both are safe and you can find them at a health food store. They do relax you to fall asleep.
@piperbay I've heard and read good things about the tart cherry. Also, the L-Theanine is good, too. Our NP recommended 100mg 3/day for my daughter to help with her sleep. She wasn't able to shut her mind off at night and it was affecting her sleep. She says it's helped some.
I also wanted to suggest Valerian over melatonin. I read something comparing the two and it suggested the Valerian didn't have the questionable qualities of melatonin. I currently have the Shaklee brand but I know quality Valerian can be purchased other places, too.

@I am still oxox wrote:I find that benadryl or other antihistamines work as well as any OTC sleep meds
Almost ALL of the OTC sleep meds ARE Benadryl, and therefore are VERY dehydrating themselves. The chemical name of Benadryl is Diphenhydramine.

My pharmacist son told me a few years ago to try Benadryl & that it contains the same ingredients that are in the OTC sleeping aids.

I've tried Benadryl for sleep and felt terrible in the morning.

@Teddie A friend suggested LTheanine to me for anxiety. I like it and it does help. Never used it for sleep.

@Lali1 My daughter was having anxiety, also. We are working with our nutritional chiropractor, too, and trying to get to the bottom of her problems. The NP recommended the L-Theanine for anxiety and to help her to let go at night to sleep.
It's terrible when you can't sleep. I hope you continue to do better.
