I took melatonin in various doses for quite awhile, it worked at first, but then not so much. I do deep breathing exercises now and if I'm tired enough it knocks me out and usually I can sleep 4 or 5 hours before I wake up.

Melatonin didn't work for me, but I have trouble both falling asleep (can't shut my brain off!) and staying asleep.
My Dr. gave me Trazadone and it works like a charm for me. I take 100 mg.
It's non-narcotic, no addiction threat, no 'hangover' the next AM, with none of the side effects of a lot of the prescription sleeping meds.
Talk to your Dr., you'll be SO glad you did, IMO!

When hubby was post of after his hip replacement, he was instructed to take 5 mg of melatonin and 50 mg benadryl

It does not work for everyone.
But, if this was your first attempt, keep trying. It does not work like a sleeping pill, it builds up the natural element your body is missing over time.

never worked for me. i also tried a variety of sleeping pills. worked very well in the beginning, then when i had to start taking 2 of them at a time, i just gave it up. what works for me now is to go to bed as late as i can, then i fall asleep and stay asleep.

I took Benadryl for years and it worked great for me for a long time, but I think my body just got too used to it and it finally didn't work anymore for me.
That's when my Dr. switched me to Trazadone. He told me that your body builds a tolerance to almost any drug after taking it for a long time.

I take one Trader Joe's brand of Melatonin (500 mcg). It works for me and has worked for many years now. Sometimes my dreams are kind of vivid, but never had any that were disturbing.

It will take awhile for you to see whether Melatonin works for you; do not judge the supplement based on one dose. This needs to build in your system and as it does, you will see a gradual improvement.
Please be very careful about taking anything over the counter without knowledge and approval from your doctor. You and I could take the exact same dose of Benadryl at the same time, but how it affects me at 62, and how it affects you at 80+ will be very different, which is why doctors are cautious with what they prescribe for their older patients.

@halfpint1 I am taking tart cherry pills and they are a source of natural melatonin. I take three a day. When I tried the regular melatonin supplement, it just made me groggy in the morning. Very happy with the tart cherry.
At bedtime I also take Passionflower lozenges and some chewable L-Theanine. Both are safe and you can find them at a health food store. They do relax you to fall asleep.
