If you are going to have a MRI done, take for instance on the knee or foot, do they scan the entire body or just the area in question? Thanks in advance.

@sarahpanda Just the area of concern

The doctor orders a scan on a specific area and they only do that area.

I just had a problem with a joint in my finger. The doctors had a small MRI machine that the patient just puts their hand in.

It just depends. When my husband had a bad fall , he was scanned all over, because they were looking for damage

Your whole body is in the machine but they are only scanning the particular body part.

When it was my foot, I went in foot first and my head was sticking out, from what I recall. It was a long time ago. Others had to be head first, so it didn't matter if my feet were sticking out, because I didn't know the difference with my head in it.
If you're nervous about claustrophobia, take some sort of tranquilizer before you get there.

@sarahpandaJust the area in question. If you've never had an MRI before, do some quick research and become familiar with it. All your questions, and some you might not have thought to ask, will be answered.

☠️ Say No To MRI Contrast ☠️
Research Gadolinium

@Debkagypsy @sarahpanda That's an absurd and dangerous comment. Gadolinium enhances visibility of the tissue/tumor/organ being examined. While some people may be allergic or sensitive to it, your doctor or radiologist can determine if you're one of them. If you are, you might be prescribed a manganese-based alternative that, while perhaps not as effective, is still better than forgoing contrast altogether when it's needed for proper diagnosis and follow-up.
