I have recently been advised by my doc to take a daily low dose aspirin but I am hesitant to do so because I have GERD and a hiatal hernia.  Has anyone with these pre-existing conditions had success and if so, are there any special tricks to keep your digestive system in good working condition?   Hoping to hear some success stories to ease my concern.

Re: Low dose aspirin and GERD

My doctor also recommended it. I have the same conditions you have. I had to give up the aspirin after several days. It caused burning in my esophagus. I never took it again.

@Vineyard Girl I have gerd & a small hiatus hernia & take an enteric coated low dose aspirin everyday.If you get enteric coated aspirin it won’t affect your gerd or hernia. I’ve been taking it for 20 years.

I use a coated aspirn like Ecotrin with no issues

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

Unfortunately, I used the enteric coated aspirin, baby dose, and it had an effect on me.

Re: Low dose aspirin and GERD

I eventually had to stop taking low dose aspirin everyday.  It gave me heartburn, upset stomach and nose bleeds all the time.   My doctor told me to stop taking it everyday and go to just once a week because she said one low dose aspirin stays in your system for one week.  I had to stop that ritual because I was having the same symtoms.   As of now, I don't take it.  Hope this helps.

@Vineyard Girl

I've had GERD for a long time, there are four generations in my family with it.

I take a low dose aspirin every day for my heart, I have no repercussions with GERD.  I also take a pill every morning for the GERD.

I follow all he lifestyle aids for it, I don't eat spicy food, I don't drink a lot of alcohol, and I never eat without waiting three hours to lay down in bed.

Re: Low dose aspirin and GERD

My gastro doc also told me many years ago not to take any nsaids after my endoscopy because of my GERD and large hiatal hernia.  I recently had an eschemic colitis attack and now he has changed his mind and wants me to take the low dose aspirin, claiming that it would be much for dangerous for me not to.   So, I have to weigh the pros and cons and its not going to be an easy decision.  Thanks for your input.
