Re: Low Carb vs Keto - What's The Difference?

@JeanLouiseFinch

As I said, nutrition was one side of my double major.  I went for the more creative side.

I totally remember the "Dr. Atkins" and the "Drinking Man's Diet".

Decades ago, I tried Atkins and did great, ate what I wanted with no protein limit, and one night, ate 1/2 of a crock pot chicken.  I did have an issue, I kept passing out!  I did a urine check and was registering keotones.  Not good.  I was losing weight rapidly and always on the edge of a headache.

I talked with my doctor, and never did that again.

@Susan Louise @GinzTonic @Leeny If anyone is going to follow KETO, you need to discuss it with your doctor first.

When you eat the high protein and fat of a Keto diet, if you're really efficient, you will have keotones spill over into your blood and urine similar to what a diabetic has in their blood!!!

To mimic the blood of a diabetic is not healthy, especially if you prolong the diet and it is hard on the kidneys too.

When you get off of Keto, you haven't reeducated yourself in healthy eating to maintain the weight loss.

Any doctor or nutritionist will tell you an "eating plan" is the most healthy way to lose weight and the easier on your body.  Weight Watchers is an example.  The largest weight loss group world wide.

The science part of my degree was spent in chemistry and food science.

Just to clarify @ECBG . You are speaking of diabetic ketoacidosis. It is completely different than being in ketosis. When I do intermittent fasting, I have mild ketosis. It is not dangerous. As a Type 1 diabetic for over 50 years, what you are confusing with ketoacidosis is a simple reliance of fat instead of glucose to fuel the brain.

Ketoacidosis is when a diabetic does not have enough insulin and the blood becomes acidic. Life saving insulin must be administered immediately. It can kill a diabetic. Eating a ketogenic diet has nothing to do with ketoacidosis but is often confused with the medical emergency.

There is an adjustment period when doing a ketogenic diet @ECBG . It can initially cause dehydration and weakness. I enjoyed it because I was never hungry and maintaining my weight was effortless. However, I paid a high price for eating that way for years. I would not suggest it for anyone. The diet you share here is healthy and has a lot of variety. You have real control when you eat sweets. Myself? I have to avoid all desserts or drinks like Instant Breakfast because they set me off to want more and more sweets. That's why I love the idea that there is no one size fits all diet. You do moderation, well. I do better with abstinence. One bowl of ice cream and it's over.😂🙁

@ECBG

I don't believe in dieting this way anymore. I did the Dr. Atkins diet years and years ago and almost did myself in. I was only eating 10 carbs a day. My Dad was a Type I diabetic and I know how he dealt with being in Keto  a lot. I have to watch my carbs. but not to the extremes a lot of these "diets" call for. When I was in the hospital a couple years ago I was on a low carb diet.. I was given 40 to 60 carbs per meal and I still was able to lose weight. One just needs to choose wisely.Heart I am sure some will feel that is way to many carbs, but again, it all depends on what kind of carbs you are eating.

I do not do well on under 125 g carb. I know from much experimentation over the years. I also can’t handle high fat. 🤢 My focus is on whole foods . Organic and grass fed where possible. I’m mainly an ovo-lacto pescatarian. Chicken or beef about one a month. If I had the commitment, my heart would prefer vegan.

So much mis information out there . It is important to do research. I eat clean , healthy fats , protein and carbs .  I haven't touched a food with an ingredient list in over 5 years . I am 55, have always exercised , and feel this way of eating supports my lifestyle.  It' so not about bacon and cheese ! The benefits of eating this way are amazing .

Pushing this keto krap diet is as tiresome as the person that pushed the plant based diet.  I noticed she no longer posts here.

Re: Low Carb vs Keto - What's The Difference?

I do a "dirty keto" eating from 50-75 carbs a day.  No gluten or refined sugar and the fats are healthy fats ie avocado, EV olive oil and the like.  Keto is NOT high protein.  Yes, some people on keto think that they can have a pound of bacon and lose weight.  Why yes you can BUT it's not the healthy way to do keto.

ketosis is NOT ketoacidosis!
