Losing my doctor

[ Edited ]

I got a letter today from my neurologist informing me he is closing his medical practice due to "personal reasons". It will be effective Oct 30. I am really shocked and so far have not found another Dr in this field who is within 100 miles from where I live who is in my insurance network. I am in a quandary as to what to do! Any suggestions? He does not have another group or doctor taking over the care of his patients, so it looks like I am on his own.

Your insurance company will HAVE TO come up with someone to take over his patients or allow you to go out of network. They can't just leave you with no one.

Your primaary care physician may be able to help you. After my husband had a stroke, there was not a neurologist in the area in private practice. Our primary care physician took over the care of my husband. We are pleased with the care he has provided.

@lovesrecess

Suggest you ask your current Neuro. to recommend a new one.

I know this is scary, I’m in my Neuro’s office evert 5 weeks. Would be worried for about care.  Best wishes.

My PCP has no idea who to recommend.

Thanks. My biggest worry is having my meds refilled. They are literally lifesaving. I am calling first thing Monday morning. Most neuros only treat children with my condition. It's complicated but I choose not to divulge anything else.

    About 3 years ago my PCP Of 22 years retired. He just closed his practice with very little notice. We found out a month before when DH went in to see him.He offered his patients no referrals at all. Just left us high & dry.I later learned he had planned his retirement for 2 years.

   I don’t get how a caring considerate physician could suddenly close up shop & not look back. He had absolutely no regard for the patients he had spent decades caring for.

  I still haven’t found a PCP that I’m comfortable with.

Years ago my ob/gyn retired but he sent a long list of other drs and also the other two Dr s in his group took over some of his patients; it was a smooth transition. This time, I don't know what to do yet. When my DH was going through radiation treatment a few years ago, his dr went to Columbia for vacation and never came back!

Clearly you are in a difficult situation. Are any pedi neuro's nearer to you. Possibly one would see you as a consult.

I was in a similar situation about five years ago. My specialist was killed in a bicycle accident while I was carefully being weaned off a tricky med. It worked out but it was frightening.

@lovesrecessCheck with the Neurology Dept. of your hospital. Perhaps they will have some suggestions, be able to help, or know of someone planning to open a new practice in the area. I'm surprised your PCP is not able to help you at all.
