When something lasts as long as it begins to worry you, it's your body telling you it's time to get help.
I will never understand why people put off going to the Drs if they have a medical issue that affects your life.
If you are coughing (or repeating a clearing of your throat) to the degree you feel like, "is this ever going to stop"; why wouldn't you want to go to someone who could stop it.
Like I said, "You're an adult. You need to take care of your body. If it bothers you enough, you'll go get help for it. Also, if it has lasted some time people around you are probably wondering when you're going to get some help."

I'm just going to share this with you.
10 years ago, my aunt was 2 weeks away from her 62nd birthday. She had filled out her paperwork for early S.S. She had a nagging cough for a couple of months. Her daughter who is an R.N. said, "enough already...go to the doctor"! She was diagnosed with inoperable grade IV lung CA. She was dead within two weeks.
I know this is very extreme and unusual.
I myself had visited a sick aunt in a rehab facility. Six weeks later I was in the hospital with bacterial pneumonia.
MAKE HIM AN APPOINTMENT.

Well, my brother-in-law had a kind of cough for many years. He wasn't sick, just a cough.
He died of esophageal cancer. The Dr thinks the cough was caused by irritation in the esophagas caused by acid reflux.

Go to the doctor. ASAP.
It could be one of several dangerous possibilities you at least want to rule out.

A nagging cough is nothing to mess around with .....
even if you have to get a couple men friends to "kidnap" him, get him to his MD, stat.

Yep; that's one of the causes.
So are allergies, chronic sinusitis, and the aforementioned GERD.

Forgot to mention that for a lingering cough that hasn't really responded to anything, my docs have prescribed a steroid to lessen the lung inflammation.
It almost always cures a non-serious chronic cough, like from bronchitis, etc.
