Just got off phone with my dr. She said my labs showed no vitamin D that could be discerned! She has called in a script for 8 capsules of Vit D, 1.25 MG (50,000 units) to be taken once a week for 8 weeks.
The test they did was the Hydroxy 25 Vit D test which is suppose to be the most thorough.
She said this very well could be what was causing my severe leg cramping. I took the muscle relaxer and it did help, but of course I can't take that all the time. So glad to maybe have an answer. Time will tell.
Thanks for all of your responses to my original post.

That's very interesting - never thought of having a test (blood?) for cramps. Thanks for your info. I always hear to keep your calcium and mag levels up to prevent this issue but, of course, Vit D is important, especially in the winter (when we have less sunshine).
I can't handle dairy so I take Caltrate & Vit D 600-D calcium supplement - in addition - to my regular vitamins every day. (rich in Vitamin D is on the label and at all drug stores)

I'm wondering if there is one Vitamin that would have all the necessary supplements one would need?? Probably not. I am not very good about taking vitamins, but I think I'm going to pursue this. Of course, I'll take the script she called in, but I'm pretty sure I need to be taking some sort of vitamins everyday (I'm 63 yr. old). It just gets so confusing to see all the different vitamins and minerals that a body is suppose to have and not knowing which you should be taking daily.
I don't eat dairy, red meat, including pork and avoid sugar. Probably am missing some important nutrients, but I do eat whole grains, poultry veggies and fruit. What am I missing???
Thanks for your replies.

Not sure what you mean about 1 Vitamin having all the supplements one needs. People usually ask "what supplement has the most Vitamins in it", almost the opposite of your question. I personally do not believe in supplementation unless it is absolutely necessary because of ones body's inability to produce enough of it. I have always felt that natural is the best and most nutritious way to meet at least the MDR of vitamins and also very importantly, the minerals necessary for the body to function at it's best.
Only about 20%, on average person, of Vitamin D comes from the foods we eat. The recommended IU for Vitamin D varies with age. The number of the required amount goes up with age. For your age that would be 400IU per day and over 70 would be 600IU per day.
The sun is one of the best and easiest sources for Vitamin D and as little as 10 minutes in midday sun can produce about 10,000IU for some people. The amount of time and IU's is associated with skin color with dark skinned people are said to produce less than the fair skinned. The reason for more being required as we get older is because the body usually produces less of this vitamin.
Sounds like you are a vegan and missing dairy leaves one less good and easy source of obtaining this vitamin. Many "fortified" foods are also a good source of Vitamin D. I've been a lacto-ovo since the mid 1970's and have never felt or seen the need for going the vegan route, but to each be their own.

Wow John, I don't think I am a vegan. The whole truth is about 4 years ago I was very overweight and decided to do something about it. I was so tired of feeling tired and just going to the mailbox exhausted me. Well through a lot of research and with drs. help, I was able to lose almost 100 lbs. and have kept it off all of this time. I am very proud of what I have done. Before losing the weight, I was pre diabetic and had other health issues. Since losing the weight I have never felt better in my entire life. The foods I eat are by my choice rather than any sort of life style choice such as "vegan, vegetarian and so forth. I have been known to have an occasional filet mignon at times so I have nothing against eating red meat. The dairy issue is because I wanted to cut down on my fat intake. I know my diet is not perfectly balanced, but it has worked for me along with portion control and exercise.
Hope this clears some of this up.
I was hoping you would see this so you would know I updated folks.
Have a great day
Vicki

You have good timing - Nature's Code ONE (one pill a day) has just been offered by QVC! A254163
I've been taking the one packet (6 pills per packet) Nature's Code for over 50 (age) for 15 - 20 years or whenever the Q first offered them...and on Auto Delivery with price and shipping locked in all those years.
In addition to this packet I add the Vit D supplement as well as Hyaluronic Acid - and I also don't eat/like sweets - love fish - beef is okay - love veggies - toss salad just about every day - and no dairy (especially cheese) due to internal distress later.
Congrats on losing weight you didn't need or want...........keep up the good work - just get more vitamins in your diet!
