Last month I needed to have a tooth pulled..I was in a lot of pain(my dentist retired)..Called 5 dentists and 1 oral surgeon  in the surrounding towns and was told "we aren't taking new patients" try in Dec.!

Finally found 1 that took pity on me and he pulled it later the same day..

1st. question: insurance or cash?..I guess he took me because I paid cash!

Doctors are just as bad.

@Jo1313

Well, the main reason Americans file for bankruptcy is medical bills, it's obvious too many doctors and dentists have done work they'll never get paid for.  They have businesses to run and employees to pay, so I understand the problem..

In our neck of the woods, even with good insurance, dental practices demand full payment on the date of service for anything the insurance doesn't cover.

I need to get an appt with my ENT for a serious situation. I won't bore anyone with the details...but I really, really need to see him asap...have been trying for a week to speak to his nurse...I leave messages and request for a call back...crickets. Called again first thing this morning...was told when and if the dr gets my records , (which I was already told they have in their office) and if he wants to see me, they will call me on Thursday or Friday. It will be late August for his first open time since he is in surgery most of the time.  Going to the ER is not an option and he is the one who performed my rare surgery and who my other drs who were involved in the surgery said to see. They can't even get into to ask for my appt.

Any suggestions? Another ENT won't be able to address the problem.

Do you use the patient portal that is available for use for messaging doctors offices, checking test results, etc.

My husband and I have used the patient portal when we have had difficulty trying to contact a doctor's office by phone--when no one from the office calls back when there's a problem regarding an appointment, etc.

We've had better lresults using the portal than trying to get through by phone.

As another option, I would also recommend going in to your specialist's office like others have recommended here, and request an appointment that way, if you can't seem to get through to them any other way or they don't call you back.

@Toppers3   Using the patient portal is great advice and a tool to use first if trying to reach the doctor.

We have a close family friend that is my cardiologist.  He told me if I needed him, go through the patient portal instead of calling his cell.

He checks the portal frequently during the day rather than the cell for a call or text.

Give the portal a try.

Re: Just trying to get a drs appointment!

If indeed the concern is "serious" and needs to be seen "ASAP", why not go to urgent care and get the facts documented.  They can make a referral or send you on to the ER.

Documentaion is key.  Make sure all communications are written, not oral.

I don't know what part of the country everyone that commented lives in but telling the OP to go to Urgent Care or the ER to get some kind of results isn't something that would happen here.

The ER doctor will make a recommendation that it be followed up with a specialist or PCP.

They will not be making an appointment with any kind of specialist for the patient.

If the condition is life threatening and the OP goes to an ER in a hospital where the surgeon practices, the ER doctor will intervene. She will not be released if it is a true emergency @CelticCrafter .

@Trinity11  Your absolutely right.  I was having some dental work done about 20 years ago and was worried as it was a Friday and my Dentist was going out of town. The front desk receptionist told me go to the ER in a hospital.  They have dentist's on call 24/7 and will help you if it's an emergency. No problem.

@Trinity11 I know that however even though the OP said it was a serious situation, how serious is it if she's on here posting about it and asking what she should do about it..

Post 18 states she's not wasting her time at the ER knowing she will only be told to see the ENT.

I took her at her word @CelticCrafter . Her definition of serious is probably different than mine. The only time I use ER's is for emergency, life threatening conditions. I am talking about strokes and two heart attacks. Another time when I had ketoacidosis from Type 1 diabetes. There have been more but I have always been admitted and my doctors were called to further treat me.

@Trailrun23  It's time to change doctors. Whenever I need something from my PCP I simply us their portal and within hours I get a call back or an answer on the portal. I NEVER have to wait.

I have found so many frustrations with the administive aspects of the medical field lately- So much has changed, all for the worse, examples, longer wait times by weeks, rude staff, getting records takes weeks if the request form gets routed at all, information not shared when it is supposed to be shared electronically, list goes on... The field has become terrible to navigate. If you get very sick, you are forced to go to urgent care or ER, you simply can't get into any office for weeks. This is in CT...🙄🙄🙄
