Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

[ Edited ]

After telling my n/p that, for some reason, I feel like a million dollars, she prescribed a thyroid bloodtest.  Sometimes mumm's the word.  I've been putting it off....... (Said in a nice way, because I know that they want to make sure all is well.)

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

I am just now seeing this thread   ...........  I was originally diagnosed with an overactive (hyper) thyroid, instead of having surgery to remove my thyroid ( I did not want a scar on my neck) I opt for the radioactive thyroid pill!   It took too much of my thyroid, and I became hypo and until my Dr. was able to get my dosage of meds correct, which took almost a year, I gained weight, and now am having a hard time losing weight!  I use to take synthroid, but take the generic, because my insurance only pays for the generic. I get my levels checked often, they come back normal, but I stay tired all the time!  I have been taking meds for almost 20 yrs now, thyroid problems are hereditary, it runs on my mother's side of the family, my mother, my sister, and two aunts had thyroid problems.

@hoosieroriginal  This thyroid thing is really an ongoing saga LOL.  My sister, who began hypo, then went hyper, is stable now.  She never had the emotional thing, either.  She tends to have the hotness still and struggles with weight - according to her.  This past winter, I began to rev up again and had to keep reducing my dose until I was totally off.  I had my levels checked when we got back to Michigan, and they were normal.  I feel good being off, so right now I take nothing Rx wise.  I don't know if stress can effect levels or not, but this past winter was an emotional roller coaster with Quincy, treatment and care, etc and then ultimately losing him.

I have found through the years that certain supplements have helped.  Tri-iodine, selenium, and tyrosine.  My PA is aware of these and supports it.  I hope you can get relief.  It is terrible to be cold and to watch what you eat only to gain!  One other thought, do you sleep well at night?  This can be an issue.

Let me know how things are going and what you decide to do!

@tends2dogs - Hey, I just ordered some thyroid supplements on Amazon - very highly rated - over 3,000 ratings.  Some people said they were even on Synthroid and didn't feel well - I don't want to go through that.  People said more energy, sleeping better, less fogginess, less coldness.  Sounds right up my alley - hope me luck!

@hoosieroriginal  Did your supplements arrive?  What did you end up getting. I am anxious to hear how you feel after taking them for awhile.

@tends2dogs - AN UPDATE:  After being on it awhile now, I'm going off of it - I can't sleep at night - it must be these meds that are doing it.  I may try again later, but I just can't function if I don't get my sleep.  My constipation is much better though (which was part of my symptoms).  So I'm a little torn.  I haven't seen my energy go up AT ALL.  That is the main thing I was looking for.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@hoosieroriginal  What time of day do you take it?  Thyroid RX are usually taken upon rising on an empty stomach.  No eating for half an hour.  That being said, I don't know the ingredients of this particular thyroid aid.  Sometimes Iodine will "rev" you up.  That is too bad.  If you were taking it later in the day, I would give the morning a try.  I am going to go back and look up this pill if I can find it.  Also, how many do you take?  Maybe reducing the dose?

I am going to look this up and will write again.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@hoosieroriginal  I checked the ingredients.  All those herbs may be what is keeping you awake.  What I take for thyroid health is 750 mgs. tyrosine, 200 mcg selenium, and Tri- Iodine 12.5 mgs.

I would drop the herbs.  They are weightloss herbs and if you can get your thyroid going again, that should take care of that.  Also, for sleep, I have always relied on Valerian root from Walmart.  This is all my opinion and what worked for me.

Don't give up.

@tends2dogs - do you take those herbs separately or do they come in one pill?  Yes, I saw some of the herbs in mine are definitely weight loss - they don't make you shaky or anything, but I'm thinking the same thing that it is what is keeping me awake.  I was taking one in the morning and they recommended one at night - I dropped the one at night and still couldn't get to sleep.  Where do you get your herbs?

@tends2dogs - are there name brands for your tyrosine, and is Tri-iodine the name of the item you take?

@hoosieroriginal  Sorry I am just getting back with you.  I order most of my vitamins from Vitacost.  Anything over $49 is free shipping.  Anyway, you can get selenium anywhere.  If you take a multi vitamin, it is probably in there.  I took an extra 200 mcg. for awhile.  The tri-iodine is by Terry's. It contains 3 different forms of Iodine.  There is another brand called Iodoral, but is sometimes harder to find.  I have been using Terry's for quite a while and is a good one.  I take one a day.  I take the Vitacost brand of the tyrosine.  One 750 mgs. a day.  You may be able to find this at Walmart or other drug stores.  It is an amino acid.

I had a dog that was hypothyroid that was put on Synthroid.  He never improved or lost weight until I added these supplements.  He went from 145 pounds to 115.  I think that is because Synthroid doesn't address the T4 to T3 conversion.  The natural ARMOUR does.  There are other natural ones, too.

I don't take the weight loss herbs that are in the pill you have.  When my thyroid is "working" properly, I don't seem to have weight issues.  Mine is more of mental fog, flatness, hair loss, etc.  I have never had trouble sleeping, thank God.

Can you return the supplement that you purchased?  Sometimes it takes a while to hit on what works, even with a RX.  I am happy to answer any questions you might have, but I am by no means an expert.  I can only share what has worked for me.

Don't give up.  You can feel better, really.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

Hi @Hooty- I also took RAI, and was told that the point of taking it was to knock out the entire gland.

Mine was not entirely destroyed either, but I do fine on Armour, except that it's so darn pricey.

@violann, you know I asked my Dr. about Armour and she just told me I was not a candidate for it.  Have you gained weight, I have and just cannot lose it!
