@NickNack  Is yours autoimmune?  Maybe that makes a difference.  You tend to swing back and forth between hypo and hyper.  When you are hyper there is no way you need or want to take the meds.  It speeds you up worse.  I was losing close to a pound every couple days and was so hot.  My sister took meds to bring her hyper under control and now she is off any Rx for it.  Hers, too, is autoimmune, involving antibodies.  She takes supplements daily, too.

This isn't to say that we will never need the Rx again.

@tends2dogs  My hypothyroidism is not autoimmune.  I was diagnosed maniy years ago and take levothyroxine.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@Yesyesyes568, @hoosieroriginal,  I neglected to note that right after I started my levo, I researched online and found an excellent book entitled "Thyroid Healthy" by Suzy Cohen.  Find it on (at least) amazon.com.  I've read it and keep going back to chapters and info in it.  It's become my thyroid bible if you will.

There is a wealth of necessary info we all need to know about our thyroid, what it is, where it is, and just how much it absolutely rules our entire body functions and life in general.

Buy this book, you will not be sorry.  It will also bring to your mind questions (and ammo) to take to your endocrinologist to learn as much as you can about getting healthy, better things to eat, things to not eat, how to take care of yourself.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

Something very important about taking our drugs for thyroid albeit levo or synthroid, is how and when you take it.

My NP never discussed with me the importance of taking levothyroxine properly.  I found this info out because since it was/is a new drug for me I read inside & out the extensive description paperwork attached by my pharmacist the first time he filled it for me.  I also read the book I noted earlier here "Thyroid Healthy" by Suzy Cohen.

So be sure you discuss this intensively with your Dr and/or your Pharmacist.

I am sorry to hear this information and I hope you have had a second opinion?  With the DX there is the a Biopsy, I am sure this is how you found out.  Many people have issues with weight gain and hair loss.  Some have experience with being very tired.  It could be genetic have you checked with anyone in your family to see if it is? this way you can have a map of how you want to handle it.  At some point you may be faced with removal of the gland if it grows or cause additional problems.  Be very PROACTIVE. I speak from knowledge not from guessing. Peace be with you.

Is this true?  I was dx'd 5 years ago, take the generic, am fine (feeling, weight, hair, etc), but never had a biopsy.

Has anyone else had a biopsy to be diagnosed with hypo or hyper or hashi?

No, mine was diagnosed by bloodwork and symptoms.

@PINKdogWOOD When I took the natural Armour, I took it the first thing in the morning with my coffee.  Not suppose to eat for half an hour.

@tends2dogs- thank you! After many years going to "the best thyroid specialist in the county" I finally realized that the care I was receiving from"best doctor" was very one-size-fits-all and not very helpful to my specific case.

Subsequently I found a far better, more helpful endo who specializes in both thyroid disease AND diabetes.

I have lost a good deal of weight, and relied on cruciferous veggies for a good deal of what I eat, and she concurred that they are good for me. She takes a very personalized approach to her patients' care, very important IMO for Thyroid patients.

My endo said exactly the same thing as your PA about broccoli!

@violann  Glad you found someone that listened to you.  This is very indivdual, not one size fits all.  Just like the bloodwork, the parameters are just that.  What is good for one isn't always good for another.  I could call my PA when something popped up and she would adjust according to what I was experiencing.  I respect that she knows I know my body better than a print out on a lab report.  It has worked well for me and sounds like it is working for you, too.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@tends2dogs  I don't know what Armour is but from all I've read, at least levothroxine is to be taken first thing in the morning with 8 oz of water.  No other drink like coffee, nor food is to be had more sooner than one hour after taking levo.

I believe Synthroid work the same way.

Although, I have read in many other forums here on thyroid that a few take their's at bedtime.  I actually tried that for one full week and for some reason or another, I did not sleep well at all doing that so I take mine the minute I get up with water.  No coffer for one hour afterwards.  It's mid morning before I have anythning to eat, usually after dog walk (10ish or later).

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@CaryH  After reading your post, I wonder if you are one of "lucky" ones who does not convert T4 to T3.  Neither Levothyroxine or synthroid contain T3 only T4.  If you can't convert, you aren't getting T3 therefore you aren't getting any benefit or seeing any change in how you feel.

Try to find a doctor that will write a RX for Armour or natural thyroid.  It contains both T3 and T4.  Many doctors don't like this "drug" but it is tried and true and has been around for MANY years.  It is natural.  It may be worth a try.

You sound like you have a great attitude despite how you feel physically.  Maybe you could feel great, too.

@hoosieroriginal  This thyroid thing is really an ongoing saga LOL.  My sister, who began hypo, then went hyper, is stable now.  She never had the emotional thing, either.  She tends to have the hotness still and struggles with weight - according to her.  This past winter, I began to rev up again and had to keep reducing my dose until I was totally off.  I had my levels checked when we got back to Michigan, and they were normal.  I feel good being off, so right now I take nothing Rx wise.  I don't know if stress can effect levels or not, but this past winter was an emotional roller coaster with Quincy, treatment and care, etc and then ultimately losing him.

I have found through the years that certain supplements have helped.  Tri-iodine, selenium, and tyrosine.  My PA is aware of these and supports it.  I hope you can get relief.  It is terrible to be cold and to watch what you eat only to gain!  One other thought, do you sleep well at night?  This can be an issue.

Let me know how things are going and what you decide to do!

@tends2dogs - Hey, I just ordered some thyroid supplements on Amazon - very highly rated - over 3,000 ratings.  Some people said they were even on Synthroid and didn't feel well - I don't want to go through that.  People said more energy, sleeping better, less fogginess, less coldness.  Sounds right up my alley - hope me luck!

@hoosieroriginal  Did your supplements arrive?  What did you end up getting. I am anxious to hear how you feel after taking them for awhile.

@tends2dogs - Got them yesterday - Called:  1 Body - Thyroid Support - I took it in the afternoon.  Some reports indicated upset stomach - I did not experience that.  You are supposed to take one in am - one pm.  By the way, inside the box was a "Claim your free product"  Went online and they will send you a second bottle of the same item free if you write a review on Amazon - I haven't reviewed yet, but ordered my free bottle.  I'll keep you updated on my results.  I'm sure it will take awhile to get settled in my system.  People report better sleeping - feeling more alert in the morning when they get up, more energy.  Hoping it works!  Had over 3,000 great reviews.
