Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

@hoosieroriginal  When you say numb, do you mean cold?  I am always cold. That is a symptom of hypo.  Hair loss is another.  How do you feel emotionally?  The only way I could describe it to my PA was that I felt flat.  It is worth pushing your doc and getting help.  You will feel better and most likely lose weight.  Thyroid effects every system in your body.  When mine converted to hyper, I had heart palpitations, heartburn, it felt like I had a hot rod running through my body, and hair loss.  Plus I was starving, ate tons and lost weight.  I felt horrid.  This is Hashimotos and you probably don't have that.  My PA said these symptoms were because everything was speeding up.  Once off the meds for a week, I was fine.  This does tell you that hypo would be the opposite - everything slows down including your metabolism.

I hope you can find an answer.

@tends2dogs - my feet and hands actually go numb.  I bought a lot of hand warmers and feet warmers for my hands and feet this winter when I walk the dogs.  Hoping that will help - my attitude is great - don't feel down or anything.  She did ask me that question.  In fact I'm feeling better emotionally than I have for a long time.  Just sudden rapid weight gain, hair loss.  I hope your hyperthyroidism got taken care of.  I'm wondering if I didn't have that problem for years - my heart raced all night long.  Now that I'm older, I think my body is going the other direction - ugh!

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

Welcome to our very large club! I'm a thirst-five year member! The answer to all your questions is a resounding yes! Yes, you should lose weight more easily now (you must also diet and exercise, tho!). Yes, you should have more energy! I'm not sure of the headache connection, but I, too, have suffered with headaches, so could be?

Advice? Don't mess around with your Synthroid on your own. Take the exact amount prescribed. It's not a matter of more will make you better faster! You could do great harm if you try to adjust your dose on your own!

you might find your hair, nails, and skin improve, as well as your mood! It isn't immediate, but well worth the wait! You'll be a new person! Good luck! Hope this helps!

I was "allegedly" diagnosed with this during my first visit to a new doctor. I didn't get to see the dr because their policy for new patients is to see the PA first. So, after bloodwork which showed one thyroid level +1 from normal she prescribes levo. I was skeptical and got a second opinion from an endocrinologist. All readings were normal, no levo needed. Now I see the specialist every 6 months to get blood tests just to make sure. Everything is fine, but if for some reason I DO have thyroid issues I am at least seeing a dr who specializes in those disorders.

Thyroid levels can fluctuate -- work with a specialist who can identify what's normal for you and monitor your condition.

True, very true! I was on .125 mg for nearly thirty years with no change. Then, suddenly my numbers went wild! One time I was twelve points below normal, next time I was eight points over! I have been watched due to a multi nodular goiter. Unfortunately, I have to change my dose nearly every three months! At first my new doc refused to change my dose so often. But, I began having such large swings and some big side effects from it he had to! Now I'm on .150 down from .200, which I was on for over a year!

@hoosieroriginal  My free T4 & free T3 levels are both in the normal/optimal range.  It's my TSH that continued to increase.  At least my NP was doing annual blood testing for thyroid for the last 2-3 years so we know what my levels have been.  It was when my TSH rose from 6.something to 10.something (I can't recall unless I check then numbers agains) that she said it's time to start medication for my thyroid.

I've not have my blood tested again since I started levo in May.  I suspect it should be time now to do this.

I am feeling better but it's my weight that's bothering me the most.  I see no change so far.  And yes I do pay very much attention to my diet.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

I want to thank all of those of you that have responded, so Thank You."  You have given me encouragement and valuable information to which I am very appreciative.

Im on generic Synthroid. My family Dr is taking control of this condition but I'm thinking I should see a specialist.

I have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, neuropathy non diabetic, arthritis throughout my entire body in various forms, headache and migraine sufferer, pulmonary fibrosis and I'm on oxygen and I also have chronic constipation, chronic pain, and was just scoped and found a stomach Ulcer, my lower legs hurt, so do my feet, recently including last evening I keep falling down or tripping and getting hurt. I'm an incredibly incurable insomniac and I have a headel hernia, severe dry mouth to which I'm on medication for.

If I forget anything it's because this is first time I've written them out. Incredible list, almost embarrassing, Yikes. Oh how could I forget my excruciating lower back...I'm Bone on Bone in there so you know I'm hurting. I just had my second MRI last week at the Cleveland Clinic. I'm told by dr that's why my legs and feet hurt.

It's difficult most of the time to excercise with all of this but I still try. I'll take short walks with my dauchound Chloe.

  Thanks again😉😃💚

Maintain a list of issues to share when you see your internist and/or endocrinologist.

If you are not feeling more like yourself after a couple months on your medication, discuss other possibilities with your prescribing physician.

I personally feel better on natural rather than synthetic thyroid replacement. Many people do not.

Don't forget that you are REPLACING a hormone that your body needs when you take your thyroid pill. Some people assume that the pill they are taking is to make your thyroid gland "better", and that is not the case.

Also, study up on the tests that you have been administered and what they do. In very simple terms, if your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone test) is closer to 1, your meds are working correctly. As they go higher OR lower, your doctor may change your dosage.

There are also some important dietary considerations about thyroid disease. Some very healthy/nutritious foods CAN effect your thyroid gland adversely. In my personal situation, I do not seem to be negatively effected by diet, but you may be.

Ask the next time you have a thyroid check up.

@hoosieroriginal  This thyroid thing is really an ongoing saga LOL.  My sister, who began hypo, then went hyper, is stable now.  She never had the emotional thing, either.  She tends to have the hotness still and struggles with weight - according to her.  This past winter, I began to rev up again and had to keep reducing my dose until I was totally off.  I had my levels checked when we got back to Michigan, and they were normal.  I feel good being off, so right now I take nothing Rx wise.  I don't know if stress can effect levels or not, but this past winter was an emotional roller coaster with Quincy, treatment and care, etc and then ultimately losing him.

I have found through the years that certain supplements have helped.  Tri-iodine, selenium, and tyrosine.  My PA is aware of these and supports it.  I hope you can get relief.  It is terrible to be cold and to watch what you eat only to gain!  One other thought, do you sleep well at night?  This can be an issue.

Let me know how things are going and what you decide to do!

@Yesyesyes568  My goodness!  You poor soul!  I am not sure if getting your thyroid under control is going to take care of all your symptoms, but it will make you feel "better" in dealing with them.  It may help the chronic fatigue, constipation, and insomnia.  Those 3 things could be immensely helpful in your everyday quality of life.  It sounds like you spend an awful lot of time at the doctors.  I am sorry.  I hope you can get some relief and soon!

Keep posting.  We care!

@violann  Your post is very informative.  I, too, take the natural thyroid rather than the synthetic.

When you mentioned the dietary concerns were you thinking cruciferous vegetables?  These have never bothered me either.  In fact, I take DIM for breast health on a daily basis.  My PA said that you would have to eat more than a person could ever eat of say, brocolli, to effect your thyroid levels.

Again, good post Smiley Happy.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

I was diagnosed as hypo 15 years ago when I was pregnant. I was told that this happens alot and that most likely my levels would return to normal after i had the baby. Uh, NO.

I continued to gain weight and over the years things have still really never improved. My dosage of my meds are always being adjusted because I guess my body is weird. My blood levels are never the same even though I faithfully take my meds every day.

I've never been able to lose weight since on the meds so i wish you well in that. I've lost much hair but thankfully I have so much and its really thick that it's not a big deal for me.

I constantly feel tired still. No amount of sleep or exercise seems to help.

I've been to specialists as well and they all say the same thing, that my dose needs adjusting AGAIN. It's very disheartening every single time.

Personally, I've long passed the point where I have decided that I am just going to live my life and enjoy it. I don't care about the weight and my other symptoms. Spending time with my sons and walking my dog are more important than that nap or laying in bed just resting.

I wish you luck with your diagnosis and hope it all works out for you!
