Is your sofa killing you?

[ Edited ]

Flame retardants in furniture have always worried me. Toxic flame retardants are found in upholstered furniture, mattresses, crib mattresses, carpets, draperies, plastic coated electronics and much more. Stain repellant chemicals are also discussed in the research and are linked to this.

These retardants can leave out of the sofas and get inside us. The chemicals transfer to our home environment. We call these and other molecules in the air volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The chemicals also make their way into the outside environment, with one study finding higher than expected levels of organophosphate esters in the air at 5 sites around the Great Lakes. There is no accepted standard to get rid of the chemicals, either; so they remain in our environment and have been found worldwide.  As furniture ages it breaks down releasing even more of the chemical molecules into the air. The molecules get out of the cushions and adhere the dust in our homes, which we then breathe in. These chemicals make their way into our food and clothing too.

Once inside us, the chemicals can take five to seven years for the concentration inside us to reduce by half. Studies show that the chemicals are inside of 90% of Americans. In one study in California; which looked for the flame retardant chemical, TRIS, which was banned for use in kids pajamas 30 years ago, TRIS was still was found in 75% of the tested homes. TRIS is listed in California as a carcinogen.  Studies have shown these retardants can result in endocrine disruption (interference with our hormones)  and be neurotoxic, especially to pregnant women and children, cause cancers and increase the risk of asthma and lung infections in young children.

In a study at Duke University using American couches bought between 1984 -2110, researchers found that 85% of the sofas had either harmful or inadequately tested flame retardant chemicals in the foam. Ironically, many of the fire retardant chemicals used since 1975 did not even work to retard fire, according to testing by the U.S. Consumer Product Testing Commission and other groups. According to a paper from the U. S. Government Publishing Office in 2017, “Flame retardant chemicals are linked to cancer, reduced IQ, and hyperactivity.” Due to research in this area, California passed a law in 2015 called TB117-2013 which says that furniture does not have to withstand an open flame.

Re: Is your sofa killing you?

I absolutely agree. I have been researching organic sofas for months. They are very expensive. I have found reasonable prices at The Futon Shop online..but , what if I dont like it?

Any recommendations? Pottery Barn is only eco friendly...as is Crate and Barrel...not toxic free.

and shopping yard sales for 1970 furniture isnt my thing..

thoughts?

I’m not sure where to find untreated sofas, upholstered furniture and beds. Many companies are claiming they sell them but caveat emptor.

Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, Design Within Reach, La-Z-Boy, Walmart, IKEA, Endicott Home, Mitchell Gold, Hooker Furniture, McCreary Modern at Macy’s, Kevin Charles at City Furniture, Klaussner Comfort Design, Bernhardt, Century, Flexsteel, Restoration Hardware, Heritage Home Group which Iowans Broyhill, Drexel Heritage, Monarch Sofas, Hickory Chair, Henredon, Room and Board,  Thomasville claim they have untreated furniture. There are websites that only sell untreated when you ask for furniture without flame retardants in the google search bar. A website called the Green Science Policy institute provides information and links to the companies  about this. The site also provides links to places that will make replacement cushions for the foam cushion you currently have.

Re: Is your sofa killing you?

Hi...i have researched all the companies you listed...i would look at the particular sofa they said was “eco friendly.” Eco friendly just means their was a small change...ie, glue used not toxic. These eco friendly sofas do not qualify as organic and toxin free. When i have a chance, i can provide names of webites that evaluate organic sofa..but dont be fooled by “ eco friendly.” They still have toxins..

savvy rest has organic sofas, pricey, but toxin free...

Rooms to Go online chat said “The  merchandise we carry is not treated with any flame retardants or contain any suppressant chemicals under any circumstances. We do adhere to all US Government guidelines (federal guidelines, not the heavily regulated state of California and TB117 and 117-2017) in regards to all safety protocols in line with any merchandise we carry to ensure that we are providing you with a safe place to rest after a hard days work. We hope this gives you peace of mind and look forward to helping you furnish your home.”

Go to the website I mentioned. They have a picture of the label you should look for on the sofa to see if it meets the requirements. I wish I had not spent most of my life exposed to this garbage.

LOOK at the SNEAKY wording R to G uses above. What a disgrace.

Can you look for this article as well. It’s old but it might lead you somewhere helpful. Sorry for the giant print.

Sometimes I think CA is excessive in its assessments and regulations. However, in this regard, if it doesn't pass my sniff and gut check, I am suspicious.

Re: Is your sofa killing you?

Truthfully I've never given it a thought. Scary.

I'll probably go up in flames, not only do I sit on it - many nights I sleep on it.

They don’t actually work to retard flames! They just give us cancer.

Re: Is your sofa killing you?

My sofa is killing me because I sit on it too much.
