Is there any reason why an Endodontic DDS would need your social security number?

In my state of high anxiety as I faced oral surgery I filled out the patient info. sheets and guess I added my SS# without even thinking of why I should leave it blank. Can you think of a reason why they would need it? Can I ask them to delete it from the info. sheet and from their printed record which shows they have it in their records?

I paid for the procedure in full upon entering the office for surgery. The procedure could not be done so a less invasive treatment (costing less than half) was done and the charges have not been adjusted yet.
