My husband was just at the doctor the other day as he has inflamation in his wrist and got a Cortisone shot. We asked the Doctor about Chondroitin/Glucosamine and he said that really doesn't do a thing. Just his opinion.

Of course it's his opinion, if your husband takes any type of natural medicine and it helps him, that would mean doctor visits wouldn't be necessary and doctors need to make their money. Many doctors today take natural supplements themselves but they would never tell you that. My mom''s doctor just retired at the age of 90 and she was a sweetheart, many years ago my mother's blood pressure was elevated. She wanted to give her blood pressure medicine but my mom refused, she told her she would take garlic pills and eat lots of garlic and take Co-Q 10. She Told her okay and then laughed and said that she and her husband took Co-Q 10 everyday because it's so good for your heart. From that point on, her blood pressure has been normal and she is 87 years young, people think she's in her 60's! She is in very good health and looks amazing and she takes supplements every single day.

Re: Is there a supplement that really helps reduce inflammation?

I know this is not the popular choice, but as others have suggested, eliminating as much added sugar from your diet as possible really helps with inflammation. Turmeric is good and COq-10 is specificaly recommended for heart. Also, mild exercise, like walking, although seems counter-intuitive for pain, will help. I have two advanced primary cancers, have had a lot of chemo and take an estrogen inhibitor which creates some bone pain, and find these helpful. Try to wean yourself off so much ibuprophen. Its really bad for your digestive system over the long term, not to mention your liver too. Yes I know its not metabolized through the liver like Tylenol, but over the long term almost any drug will affect it. Even though I have grave illnesses, I'm otherwise healthy as a horse, almost virtually pain free even after heavy chemo and drug use, not to mention my own arthritis issues before I even got cancer. I'm amazed myself. I used to be the ibuprophen queen. I can't even remember the last time I took one. Good luck to you, but I really cant recommend enough looking hard at lifestyle choices first like diet and exercise before even adding more supplements. They may be less toxic, but you're still popping pills.

A lot of people are talking about joint inflammation which was not the original question. The research on chondroitin/glucosamine has been mixed, which is not to say it is not very helpful for some with joint pain but not all. Worked for me for years.

Turmeric or rather the extractive of the root, Curcumin is the certainly one of the strongest anti-inflammatories we can take. But if read about it you will find that it is not well or easily absorbed. So if you want the surest and fastest results you should consider one of the well studied and researched ones, BCM-95 or Meriva. Curcumin is known to work in 5 different biochemical pathways in our body and has been successfully used with very serious chronic diseases (not as the only thing).

I have had low HDL for most of my adult life and so I take Niacin which not only lowers the "bad" cholesterol but is the ONLY thing that raises HDL (other than exercise!). Niacin works so well that studies have actually been done using it but they were not well designed so most docs do not recommend. But if you do not have liver problems, Niacin could work better than Zocor. By the way, has you doc told you that all statin drugs BLOCK the HMCo-reductase pathway in your body which depletes your CoQ10 levels. CoQ10 in itself is a power anti-oxidant and because your are taking a statin you should be taking some of this!

I have read in the past that one should not take Turmeric with Aleve.

Aleve can cause problems, especially with the heart, not to mention it thins blood considerably.

I have a blood disorder (it doesn't clot properly).

The WORST is aspirin and any derivatives of aspirin. It can stay in your system and affect blood clotting for a LONG time. Tumeric on top of ANY aspirin, Aleve, Exedrin, etc. is super bad if your blood doesn't clot.

That's why you need to talk to your doctor before adding any supplements.

My PC Dr is a big advocate of supplements and alternative medicines as excellent companions to mainstream medicine.

He highly recommends that any glucosamine/chondroitin supplement you take also have MSM and hyaluronic acid in it. He also recommended adding turmeric/curcumin capsules. I have seen a significant improvement in my pain and inflammation.

Also, reducing refined carbs (especially sugar!) can help.

Turmeric and boswelia are very good for inflammation. Also make sure you're taking enough of Vitamin D3 especially if you are low in it. I take 4,000 a day. And for those who keep saying ask your medical doctor, that's almost laughable, most doctors don't know about natural medicine or don't want to, all they want to do is give out medical prescriptions and before you know it you're addicted and, of course, you have to constantly keep going to them. And please be careful about taking ibuprofen every day, does your doctor know that you take that much ibuprofen? Taking it every day you can develop stomach problems and taking Tylenol will give you liver problems. Of course, I'm not saying to stay away from doctors if it's absolutely necessary, because there are times when you definitely need them but there are many nutritionists or naturopathic doctors that will also work with you. Some Natural remedies will work just as well as medicine but without all the harmful side effects. You just have to do research if you're taking prescription medication, to see if you can take any herbs or vitamins to make sure they don't interfere with your medication. Good luck.

Sorry Ltsah, but IMHO this post of yours steps way over the line. I've already posted about my family Dr and his qualifications. You cannot, and should not, make recommendations to anyone regarding their personal Drs. I do plenty of research regarding supplements, my sister is actually an herbalist who works closely with oncologists, and my family Dr is highly respected in both the mainstream medical community as well as the alternative community, a very rare combination.

Between the three of us, my health care is managed quite well.

If no one has mentioned it yet: "Zyflamend Whole Body".

It's a great combo of lots of very safe, all-natural AI's in one supplement - including tumeric and ginger.

I take Andrew Lessman's Turmeric. Besides inflammation, Turmeric also keeps your memory sharp.

Great point!

I have Dr. Perricone's book and found that when I stick to his recommendations, my skin does clear up - no red nose and cheeks!

If I look good on the outside - I know it's working on the inside too.
