80% of weight loss happens in the kitchen. Exercise is great (swimming being a good one), but unless you are tracking how much you are eating and creating a calorie deficit, you won't lose weight.

Swimming (and water aerobics), as said, are great for both cardio and toning.

Not true. I have read for years - first heard it from Jane Fonda - that if you walk 30 minutes a day but not change your diet at all that you'll lose 30 lbs in a year.

When I was in high school and not overweight I lost 10 lbs in two weeks by walking to the pool every day - 2 miles a day.

Walking now helps me maintain my weight - I don't have to diet as long as I walk.

Remember Jarrod from the Subway ads ? He did not have a car and it was 3 miles to the Subway where he would walk to eat everyday - he lost tons of weight doing that daily 6 mile walk, but had not changed his eating habits at all.

Re: Is Swimming Great Exercise?

At this point in my life, I want exercises that build bone density. Walking and working with weights is what I've been told to do. I think swimming is great exercise. But with time being an issue for me, I use my exercise time to do fast walking and weights work.
