As a devotee of Lou Schuler and the Venus Index, I appreciate that some of you embrace weight lifting like I do, but I don't understand the attitude.
Why not encourage the fact that someone is asking about getting healthy instead of getting up on your soap box.
If using correct terminology is "getting up on your soap box", I will happily stay on mine.
It's not about being smug or hostile.

Huh? Do you know what swimming is?

Swimming is the BEST exercise. You use all your muscles and there's no stress to your legs.

Are you not paying attention? It is because I said that I use weights to tone and everything I say puts some people on this BB off onto one tangent or another. That is all it's about.

Using correct terminology is important. When someone says "Oh, I don't want to build muscle, I just want to tone", can you see where the problem is?

It's not about YOU, as much as you would like to think it is.
I've worked as a trainer and believe that education is important and that correct terminology is important, and have said WHY I think it is important.

I've worked with trainers and they use the term ""tone"" all the time. whatever.

I swim a mile a day for fitness. It IS great exercise for cardio, resistance, and flexibility. But I totally agree with all who have said that it has to be combined with diet in order to lose weight. Sources vary as to its effectiveness for fat loss.
As for muscle building, some say that swimming makes you "soft." Competitive swimmers spend many hours in the weight room to get the muscle definition you see. They don't get that from the pool.
The best book I have ever read about swimming is Total Swimming by Harvey Wiener. It is a very old book, but one is available now on ebay. It does an especially great job of discussing the mental benefits of swimming. I've been swimming daily for 33 years and every time I think I am tired of doing laps, I reread that book and get excited all over again about being in the pool.
The best book I have ever read about weight lifting is Strong Women Stay Young by Mirian Nelson. It is excellent at explaining the benefits of weight training for women.

Not all trainers know what they're talking about.
