Suzanne Pleshette? So pretty! (Both of them, actually)

My all time favorite Dr Kildare episode was Tyer, Tyger with Yvette Mimieux.

Re: Is It Necessary To Get A Annual Physical

When I was young my only visits to the doctor were to my gyne to get my BCP Rx  and that was sufficient. But starting at age 34 when I felt a lump on my breast and found out I had breast cancer that all changed. After that Io became very diligent about my health. Unfortunately, since I have been on medicare my doctor makes me come in at least 2x a year.I wsould prefer 1x a year but what can I do - they control your Rx so they control how often you have to see them.

Re: Is It Necessary To Get A Annual Physical

I confess; I haven't been to the doctor in many, many years! I'm lucky; I'm very healthy. I haven't had a simple phsical exam in well over a decade (I'm 54). No, I've never had a mammogram either. I've had my cholestoral measured; blood pressure measured, etc. and I'm in great health--according to everything that can be measured (I test my own blood sugar, etc.).

2 of my annual physicals have saved my life-you bet I believe in them. And I felt just fine (just a little tired), and mentioned that to my MD. Thank God I did.

Re: Is It Necessary To Get A Annual Physical

I've gone for a physical every year since my mid 30's.  Once in my mid 40's my doctor said he didn't want to see me for two or three years.  I ignored it and still went the next year.  No one's going to tell me to not get a physical.  Not even an insurance company.

Re: Is It Necessary To Get A Annual Physical

I am 54 and super healthy and I want to keep it that way! I go every year for the works. Why not as if you don!t have your health you don't have anything. I believe in prevent rather than treat.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

Re: Is It Necessary To Get A Annual Physical

[ Edited ]

My doctors know me and I trust all of them (otherwise I wouldn't be going to them), so if my doctor recommends a specific schedule, I tend to agree with it.  I may push back and ask for more reasons, but generally I go with it.

For example, my new derm wants to see me every 6 months for a mole check.  I know from my original derm, that I have a lot of small moles and am high risk of skin cancer due to my misspent youth at the beach, but he only wanted to see me once a year.  I asked her why the bump to more frequent visits and she gave me specific moles she wanted to watch for 2 years and if after 2 years (4 visits) there were no changes in those moles and no new moles to worry about, we could go to once ayear.  But, I did have pre-cancerous cells removed from my face last year (not mole related), so I see the wisdom of every 6 months now. It's not like it's an invasive medical procedure to have a mole check, although I do have moles that have to be checked in places that have never seen the sun that she prefers to monitor vs my gyn Smiley Wink  But, I belong to gym, so it's not like I'm not used to being naked around people ;o)

As for a general physical with bloodwork, I had my first one at 40 and she said she didn't need to see me again for 5 years.  This was because I go to specialists for everything else (derm, opth, gyn, etc.).  I go for the general physical for all parts not covered by specialists (which are very few).

However, my work health insurance has an incentive/discount for getting a physical and bloodwork done annually.  So I have been going annually for the last 2 years.  It's a quick visit because, again, she doesn't have to cover a lot of parts, it's mainly bloodwork making sure I have good color everywhere and everything is flowing correctly.

As always, these are personal choices.  I prefer to find things out early and address them than to wait until I have symptoms to address them.

But everyone is different.

My Dr says yes and I have been doing a lot of reading on this subject lately and  its only recommended if you have diabetes, heart disease etc. If you are a healthy individual  with no issues  it is recommended every 2 years. And if you are youn with  no issues it is recommended every 5 years. Why don't all doctors know this? Wven inusrance companies agree with every 2 years.

It's not just about your current health issues, it's also about your family history.  Doctors are not just treating what you have today, they are monitoring for what you may develop tomorrow.
