Invisalign Done Today.....Should I do Veneers Next?

Just had my attachments removed today....10 months total program for me.  I had lot's to correct with my bite.

I have very sensitive teeth and thought I would love to have white teeth....also have a chipped front tooth...not to bad just uneven and shorter then the other one which actually looks decent.  I hit that 1 front tooth on something bad as a kid...it even turned darker color yellow and is always abit sensitive.

If I could whiten them I would do that and see if I liked it but since I have tried in the past with all the things offered out there and can't handle the zinging pain from them I gave up.

I am hoping someone that went thur the process of getting Veneers will answer some questions for me.

1.  How did you find someone truly skilled at doing veneers?  or did you just use your regular local dentist?

2.  How long of a procedure was it to have done?  (my dentist told me he would wiped out his schedule and just be focusing on me that day and to expect quite a few hours...most of the day!) I would be just doing the 8 top front teeth which costs ALOT!  Plus he said most only do the top and then if they want the bottom done it's on a seperate day as it is a long process.

3.  Did they remove any of your natural teeth surface?  Mine said in order to NOT look too thick and fake they remove 1mm tooth surface...and 2mm on the outer shape (I believe I remember him correctly)

4.  What was it like...do they numb you up like a filling??

5.  I asked how many patients my dentist has done...he said more then 10 but not 20.  Didn't sound like alot to me so I am kinda thinking this may be the wrong place to have it done.  Not sure...he has been wonderful but still this is a MAJOR decision.

Anyway, he did do some molds today....and said he will put together all the info and we will talk....meet to go over it in a few weeks.  I am just shopping around for information....on the fence about it at this point.

Thanks to anyone that has any advice for me!

1.  Doing veneers is not like doing implants and endodontistry.   Any competent dentist should be able to do veneers.

2.  I would not want all mine done in one day.  Your teeth are ground down and you will have to wear temporary crowns for a period as told by your dentist.

3. I had mine done in segments.  I had 4 on top and then came back for 4 on bottom.  I liked to have them done that way so I felt that they "matched," sotospeak, making the top and bottom align.  My dentist did my grinding down and impressions, i.e.,on a Monday and had the permanent crowns the following Monday,

4.  How long does it take?  It took the better part of the morning to do that but my dentist did other patients while doing mine.  The impressions have to "set up."  So during that time he could be doing something else whiile the technical assistant dinked around with whatever I needed.

5.  I don't recall about removing the surface, but removed a great deal of the tooth, each tooth.

6.  I was not numbed because there is no pain.

I never had any molds made except when I was ready for impressions which was the day we began the business.  I would not want impressions made until I started.  If you are not going to proceed in the next few days, you might require new "molds," because teeth shift, etc.

All of us who have crowns know about cost.  I have 32 and have 8 implants and some of my crowns have been redone several times for other reasons.   I could buy a twin set of Porsches (or maybe more)  for what I have spent on my mouth.

I personally would not use someone who had only done 10-20 sets.  I would prefer someone with lots of experience.

Please consult with a cosmetic dentist.  I had 8 of my uppers done with veneers.  They looked lovely.  The problem was they kept popping off, like a fingernail.  I was at the dentist every week.  Finally, he told me some people they just dont work for. So please consult with someone that has done more than 10 !!  And dont let them tell you it doesnt happen....it does.

@Nonametoday

In a similar less expensive boat than you, but I think in terms  of “ invested “ rather than “ spent “. As an investment, you are worth it !

Re: Invisalign Done Today.....Should I do Veneers Next?

This was taken from WebMD.

What Are the Disadvantages of Dental Veneers?

The downside to dental veneers include:

  • The process is not reversible.
  • Veneers are more costly than composite resin bonding.
  • Veneers are usually not repairable should they chip or crack.
  • Because enamel has been removed, your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages.
  • Veneers may not exactly match the color of your other teeth. Also, the veneer's color cannot be altered once in place. If you plan on whitening your teeth, you need to do so before getting veneers.
  • Though not likely, veneers can dislodge and fall off. To minimize the chance of this occurring, do not bite your nails; chew on pencils, ice, or other hard objects; or otherwise put excessive pressure on your teeth.
  • Teeth with veneers can still experience decay, possibly necessitating full coverage of the tooth with a crown.
  • Veneers are not a good choice for individuals with unhealthy teeth (for example, those with decay or active gum disease), weakened teeth (as a result of decay, fracture, large dental fillings), or for those who have an inadequate amount of existing enamel on the tooth surface.
  • Individuals who clench and grind their teeth are poor candidates for porcelain veneers, as these activities can cause the veneers to crack or chip.

How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?

Veneers generally last between 7 and 15 years. After this time, the veneers would need to be replaced.

@Nonametoday  Wow thank you so much for taking the time to post your experience with this.  Now I am confused as to why he did these molds today then? He said they get sent out to the lab??  I do wear my retainer 22hrs per day/night so no shifting of my teeth should happen.

With everything you posted here I am thinking I may not do this after all.  Perhaps it's just not for me and I don't feel confident in my dentist doing it now either.  I would at the very least have to go to several places that do this kinda of thing alot....like many many people not 12 or 14 people.

Forgot to mention: I asked him right out about pain and he said they freeze the area...I assumed that's numbing.  You did yours without any numbing....I have to look more into that.

Thank you for the information @Anonymous032819 .....I used to wear a night splint for my grinding/TMD but now that my bite is corrected I am hopeful I won't do that anymore BUT I will always wear my retainer at night for the rest of my life!

And today the dentist did say once I did this (IF I do it) he would make me a night splint again to wear.  So what you posted answers why he told me that today in my case.  I really am not a good candidate probably.

Thanks for the sobering information.
