Discovered it during college after I moved out of the sorority house. Eat around 10 or 11AM once a day. Must have been around 1970.
Never gained or lost any weight, it has been steady except for pregnancy.
Chalk up to laziness.

@jeanlake wrote:Yes. Discovered this 3 years ago. Lost 25 lbs first year while friends were on costly fad diets. I'm at my best when I practice this. When I veer away, I give into emotional eating. I need to get back to my 5:2 week -- so thank you, poster, for the kick in the back end. It's not difficult after week two. Drink plenty of water and continue all your activities on your low calorie intake days. Make it as routine as possible.
You and I are sisters @jeanlake, and that was exactly why I started practicing IF.
I had TWO large eating gatherings at my house during the last week, and the leftovers have driven me to despair, but I KNOW that once the house is cleared I WILL be on the straight and narrow, and eat from hunger instead of "bad ideas".
During this naughty week I have not eating for my health, but even so, I HAVE eaten SOME healthy things along with the cookies and pasta, and NEVER not once outside my self imposed narrow window (21-3].
Your welcome, and hope you find the "kick" sends you back to your best place.
Heading back to my seltzer Hibiscus and White teas, and THANKS TO YOU TOO! 😉

Two more benefits I have discovered:
If you absolutely can not do hospital food, you will be fine fasting for a week or so. You will have lost your fear.
If you travel way out of paved roads, gas, water and cell service, you will be able to pass up questionable ammo/pizza dives and pray to get somewhere by night.
Good things to know.

You fast for 'hours' and not intermittant days?
They didn't feed me for a week when I was in the hospital with diverticulitis. Wanted my gut to rest!

I have been eating this way long before it became the newest craze. I eat about 4 PM a healthy meal with fresh vegies, whole grains and low fat proteins and high fiber foods. I do not eat again until 4 PM the next day. I do have some tea, a bit of almond milk and some herbs during the day....... but no meals or food. One meal a day. Works for me.

Hi @violann,
I have incorporated that into my eating for many decades now, and for several different purposes. Some were not at times I chose to do them, more along the lines in prep for my many in hospital Colonoscopies.
The ones where I chose the time, I always made sure to make the liquids a nutritious drink. Mine were never done for the purpose of losing weight, more for differing purposes.
WOW! 100 pounds. Congrats to you and continued success with keeping or reaching your goals.

I started this several months ago, not even knowing that's what I was doing. It just suited my schedule to do basically a 16/8. I didn't even realize I was doing "intermittent fasting" until I came upon some articles about it. I found that, along with being convenient on my schedule, that my digestion had improved immensely and that I had more energy. My weight has been stable for close to a year, but I think I've gained some muscle and lost bodyfat. I plan to have a hydrostatic weighing at a gym near me that has the facility for it to get a baseline, out of curiosity.
I don't always adhere to 16/8. Some days it's 18/6.

@Laura14 wrote:@gellenThe basis is to cycle your eating window. They suggest starting 12:12 meaning if you eat breakfast at 8am you stop eating at 8pm. Most of those hours are sleeping so it’s not so bad.
You can work to a 10 hour or 8 hour eating window if you want. Up to you for what feels right.
Well I'm doing it and didn't realize it! LOL!!!!

I have had both the hydrostatic weighing, and had my Ortho friend set me up with a DEXA Scan for dual purposes. I have had several hydrostatic weighing over the years as they were said to be the most accurate. Then my Ortho tells me about the DEXA also being as accurate, or even moreso, than the hydrostatic method.
Mine both were done just a few months apart so my body fat ratio should not have changed much, if any. The results were pretty close to the same percentage, so I am pretty sure that my percentage Is pretty close to 8%. I am happy with that number now. In my running days it was always closer to 10%.
As for the fasting, I always did just that s few days before I raced a 5k or 10k. I felt much lighter and stronger when doing this over the years. I tried the "carbo loading technique" many marathon runners were using, but that made me feel sluggish and heavier, so I nixed it from my pre run procedures.
What does your 16/8 and 18/6 mean? It appears to be hours, but I have never seen it put this way.

Hi @hckynut - yes, it's a way of indicating fasting hours/eating hours. Mine 21/3 is very narrow just because it works so well for me.
I think wider spans (18/6, 16/8) are a little more typical.
