Does anyone have experience with resolving eczema in the inner ear?  I do not have eczema elsewhere.  I'm wondering, too, if anyone has been able to identify triggers for it.  Often eczema can flare with certain foods.  (I have been following an elimination diet for the past month.)

Thanks for any input!

@Julie_23 Yes, I have been diagnosed with Excema in the inner ear and nostril both. Unpleasant but true, my dermatologist prescribed a cream that I apply with q-tips and it clears it right up.

Re: Inner Ear Ezcema

[ Edited ]

THAT'S A YES! For many years I had it bad on my hands and used prescription cortisone creams. When that subsided I kept getting a patch on the back of my head. That finally went away and up until about 6 months ago I had it in one ear, it still flares up now and then but it's not constant like it was for awhile. I have a prescription for from my doctor. It's a liquid, the bottle has a tip to squeeze it into the ear canal. It's called Betamethasone Dipropionate, also says on the bottle Augmented USP, 0.05%. Now whether or not that's the generic name I don't know. But it is prescription only. I don't know for sure what triggers it but sometimes I suspect maybe shampoo gets in my ear when I'm rinsing my hair but on the other hand I only get it one ear. This stuff works quickly to resolve it, a couple of times a day for one day and it goes away for awhile, for me anyway. Haven't had a flare up in a few months.

Hi Julie,

Please ask for the RX Lidex cream!  It is absolutely the best!  I'm 3rd generation Eczema sufferer.  You will only need a tiny bit on a q-tip and don't go in too far ofcourse.

RX will say not to use on the face but I do as it is the ONLY thing that works for me.  Good luck!

I hope it's not the inner ear! Maybe the op is talking about the ear canal.  The inner ear is the part beyond the ear drum...way inside.

Thanks for the suggestions, @Jackhound Mom@shaggygirl, and @waterlily.  I'm glad to hear those things helped!

And, you're right, @JeanLouiseFinch and @SilleeMee.  "Inner Ear" is a bit misleading.  It is more the ear canal.  "Inner Ear Eczema" was the word the ENT used in describing it.

Thanks again, everybody, for all the replies!  Much appreciated.

@Julie_23 I have had it for years. The doctor gives me rx's for cortisone cream or lotion. I decided I didn't want to keep using the cream because I felt it's not good to use cortisone if there is no need.  So, I bought Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream and it works just as well as the prescriptions. It's thicker but it works. I can't find any coralation with food. I hope this helps.

Something about putting a cream in my ear would not make me comfortable. Wouldn't it get cloggy? The Lidex someone mentioned is what I used to use when I had it so bad on my hands. My prescription for my ear is a lotion, it's watery. You tip your head, squeeze it in and then rub the wetness it creates around the part of your ear you can reach with your finger. Sometimes it stings for a second if I've been poking my finger in my ear (to see if my fingertip comes out all flaky during a flare-up) and my nail scratches it.

An ENT doc diagnosed me with this 15 years ago. He gave me RX for Synalar Cream, which I have been using ever since. I apply it with a Q Tip about once every 2 weeks and it keeps the ezcema at bay.

I have been plagued with eczema all of my life.  Cutting out a lot of inflammatory foods has helped me a bit.  I also take a probiotic that has helped. I can't eat much fruit anymore as it obviously acts as a sugar which for some can be inflammatory.

Anyway, one can most definitely have eczema in one's ear.  I have had it many times.  I have had it so badly that my ear has had to be irrigated to get the dry, dead, eczema skin out of it as it was hurting my hearing.  The dermatologist and dr's I've gone to have told me to put a bit of cortaid or elidel on a cotton swab and lightly dab it in the ear.

The probiotic has helped me and it's not so bad in my ear anymore.  When it acts up, I put the cortaid in.  Cut out fruits and sugars and this may help.

Good luck.
