I am a 60 year old retired nurse. I have had mostly shoulder problems. Now the arthritis is in my knees. It has been for about three years. I did have one arthroscopic repair because the meniscus was torn as well. I got injections a month ago, WOW!!!! I may be able to put off replacements when this no longer can be done. I went from not being able to walk up stairs to be able to do that. DO NOT HESITATE!!!

How often can you get the cortisone shots? I got my first one the day before Thanksgiving last year. The pain is back again. I would like to get another show before it gets to bad. The Dr. said I very bad arthirtis. Thanks.

Hovis, I would say that your doctor should tell you how long but in my case, with Synvisc One, I was told I had to wait at least 6 months before the next injection. I don't know if I will opt for another, though.

Yes, you do need to speak to your physican about when you can have your next injection. The reason being that cortisone injections over a protracted period of time can damage the joint. So...your physician has several things to weigh: how long has it been since your last injection; how many injections have you had to date; what is the interval between injections; what did the latest films of your joint indicate; do you have any new symptoms relative to the joint; and, has there been further deterioration of your joint since commence of cortisone injections.

I've had the cortisone shots x2 - each lasted about 3-4 months. No pain at all when injected - he sprayed the area the whole time with the numbing agent. Just started the 4 shot series (one each Friday) and right now, my knee is tender and he told me it would be, that I wouldn't experience the instant relief of cortisone BUT it will be more long lasting. Stay tuned. P.S. I too have torn meniscus and it seems they let them heal on their own these days which I find interesting.

I had the cortisone shots for years and last December I need another one but the Doc suggested trying ONE GEL. It is one shot of this new product (he said it is all natural) and he was getting good results with it from his patients. I decided to give it a try and it is WONDERFUL!!!! I have no pain now, it is like a miracle. My knee cap is actually turning to the left and my right knee appears to be twice the size of the left. I even had pain while trying to sleep. If your insurance covers it I would really recommend giving it a try.

It's called Monovisc. I just had it done nearly 2 weeks ago. It has helped significantly but, it's not 100%. I expected this. I experience some instability. Last June I had an arthrosocopy for 2 meniscal tears and at that time I was told I had significant arthritis. Prior to tearing the menisci, I had no symptoms although I do have a high tolerance for pain.
Meniscal tears do not actually heal, it's just a matter of what you can live with. They will always be present. Again, it's what you can live with, how large the tear is and the position of the tear.
The ortho surgeon told me the Monovisc can be given twice a year. However, he said after a year if you continue to have symptoms, then you have to decide about getting the knee replaced. I still have minimal joint space left so, I'm going to hold on for a while. I will be 62 in August so, I will wait.

I have my ortho appt this Fri. and am hoping I am a good candidate for the gel injections and that it will give me some relief. I'm not sure, as of yet, exactly what the problem is with my knees except my family doctor said that there is some deterioration from arthritis. Does anyone know, are some people/conditions better suited for the get than others?
