I think I'm going to drown in my post-nasal drip

I hope that wasn't too explicit or make anyone gag.

But I've had post-nasal drip for weeks--I get this every winter and I nothing much seems to help. I feel sorry for my family who has to listen to me hack and cough and clear my throat all the time.

I've tried zertek and cough drops and all the other prescription and otc drugs and, oddly enough, the only thing that seems to help is oxycodone, which I take for a bad back. I try not to use it but once in a while when I'm really desperate (like right now), I do.

Ice chips help too and for those I don't need a prescription but they're not quite a effective.

Also...does anyone here have scoliosis? If so, is it painful? I have it and my back hurts a lot. I don't know if it can be surgically repaired but, again as with my post-nasal-drip, I'm getting desperate.

For your post-nasal drip that you get every winter. Have you seen anyone to check you for an allergy? Probably a good idea to see an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist about it.

I have had 2 back surgeries that removed 3 Lumbar Discs. Have had your PCP take a look at your back issue? I am assuming, since you say you are taking Hydrocodone, your doctor prescribed this for your back issue.

What tests have been run that indicate you have Scoliosis? I will say that there is absolutely no way I would take Hydrocodon for a post-nasal drip.

I've had excessive post nasal drip most of my life to the point where I'd been gagging and almost throwing up when coughing until my ear, nose and throat doctor prescribed me Atrovent nasal spray. It's to be sprayed in each nostril twice two times a day. It takes a couple of weeks to take effect once you start to use it, but it's a miracle worker.
Ask your doctor for a prescription for the generic version, which is what I have and see if it helps. Good luck!

Re: I think I'm going to drown in my post-nasal drip

well everyone's different, John. My guess about the post nasal drip being an allergy is right up there with yours. I'm also going to start using my dehumidifier again because the air here is dry as a bone.

About my back: I'm surprised it doesn't glow in the dark from all the xrays and MRIs I've had (in fact, I had so many MRIs that I've joked to the tech I could probably run the machine myself).

Yes, it's most definitely scoliosis.

I made a mistake--it's oxycodone, the kind without tylenol because I also have liver disease that has progressed to cirrosis (no, I don't drink--that's usually what I first think, too). It's odd--as soon as my liver disease was diagnosed and I was put on medication for it, it hasnt bothered me at all. You'd think it would be the liver that would drive me crazy but it doesn't; it "just" a damned allergy or something like that.

Also a big game changer is a clean air machine.  You might run it in your bedroom during the day if the light hum is an issue.  Ours always runs next to the Christmas tree-for sure!

Allergy pillow covers washed anytime you wash sheets are wonderful.

Many good ideas on National Allergy.

Did you put up a live Christmas tree? I used to get sick every holiday season until my parents realized I was allergic to Christmas trees. Now I only put up a fake tree. Also, when I get postnasal drip, taking benadryl before bed helps stop it if it's due to an allergy.

Mucinex or Coricidn HBP for Chest Congestion and cough might be a big help.  Both very gentle OTC help to dry you up.  Also changing up to Allegra could make a difference.

Re: I think I'm going to drown in my post-nasal drip

@PuppyLoverBob666   You might want to go to an allergy specialist for a complete workup.  I had severe post nasal drip and the reason I went to the asthma and allergy clinic was because I was diagnosed with asthma due to loss of breath and coughing.  Turns out I have no allergies except one minor allergy to mold and absolutely no asthma.  I have a vocal chord issue where acid backup causes postmasal drip which all cause coughing and my vocal chords close causing breathing issues, hoarseness and severe coughing.  You may not even know you have acid backup and all that going on.

Scoliosis can nearly always be helped with surgery.  My sister has noticeable scoliosis but no pain at all!

Try removing these foods from your diet:

Sugar,

red meat,

dairy,

eggs,

flour (heated to bake)

It helps!

I was using Flonase for nasal congestion and found out I was allergic to an ingredient in Flonase!

benzalkonium chloride (BAK)
