Re: I think I have a form of PSTD

Very common for us to develop anxiety as we age.

No way to hook it up we are on the second floor of a garden apt and I seriously doubt it would be allowed

@I am still oxox  There are apartment generators.  Apparently, since your apt complex does not have one, I see no reason why management would not allow it.  I would ask them.

I live in high rise.  We have generators but for some strange reason (which management/maintenance has yet to explain) they do not work inside the apartment units!

I & a few other tenents purchased apt generators from Home Depot.  And no, we did not ask management.  Luckly, in the 6 yrs I've lived here, we only had to use it once (recently).

So it does work inside your apartment? From what I read about apartment generators they are good for powering a laptop or some lights but they have very limited power. Don't expect it to power a window unit. We have outages in storms when a tree hit a power line and we have had a couple of accidents that took down power polls. Nothing you can do but wait it out. I keep flameless candles in all of the rooms in my house  and flash lights in the bedrooms. It won't last forever. If it went on for days I'd probably go to a hotel.

If it's the power losses that trigger your anxiety, start buying items you can use in the event of power loss and downed wifi. If you use a cell phone, make sure you have a car charger for it. Use it on 4G instead of WiFi. If you have an old fashioned landline, buy an inexpensive corded phone. Buy flameless candles and batteries to use all over your home. Buy a non electric can opener. Buy a battery operated clock. Buy canned foods, snacks, instant coffee, peanut butter, crackers, boxed or canned milk...shelf stable foods.you can eat without reheating. Keep them in your pantry for emergencies. Buy a big 5 day cooler. After the storm, or before, pick up bags of ice. Store in the bottom of your freezer. You can transfer the ice to the cooler for some of your food. To know if the freezer has kept your food frozen for long enough during an outage, put ice cubes into a plastic bag or a container and place in the freezer. If they're melted, you might have to use the food up quickly or store in the ice chest. Buy a hibachi or grill, charcoal, lighter fluid. Heavy aluminum foil. A couple pieces of cookware to use on the grill. You can cook on the grill. Listen to news reports for boil water orders. Get gasoline before big storms. Do laundry and dry clothes before big storms. Download some games on your devices that work without WiFi..Scrabble app does, some crossword apps do. I also have some podcast episodes downloaded, no WiFi needed. Have a couple of things to read around. Keep old clean towels to push up against doors and windows of water is getting in a little. Buy lots of big trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper before storms. Keep Chlorox on hand. Have bandages, band aides, neosporin, aspirin and Tylenol on hand. Gather and check batteries in all your flashlights. Keep within reach. Store wooden matches in a drawer inside waterproof ziploc bags. Buy those long lighters at the grocery store. Store your most important documents inside waterproof bags. Being prepared is half the battle against anxiety. My stove and my microwave are blinking right now. We must have had a power outage during the night. We get them every day where I live. We only worry when there's outages that are prolonged enough to ruin our food, or we have to stay without air conditioning for a long time. You can also buy a power inverter. It can run some items. You use it inside your home. It's kind of like an inside use generator. If you are bored and can afford to do it, you can buy the type of iPad that lets you use it without WiFi. You pay monthly for the use, just as you do your phone. You can watch all the TV there is on it. I'm not sure how this type recharges if you're out of power inside. Same goes for laptops. You can get the type that you pay a fee to use with or without WiFi. If thunderstorms continually scare you and cause great anxiety you can ask your primary care doctor for a single month of anti anxiety medication to take only in those few instances your anxiety is out of control. I'm also going to recommend this awesome portable battery operated light I just got from amazon. It's hard to close when you put the batteries in, but once you finally get it set up it throws the most ligh of any of them. It is inexpensive. It can light up an entire room.  EDITED TO ADD THAT A 3 WAY BATTERY, PLUG, HAND CRANK WEATHER RADIO IS ALSO A PLUS TO HAVE. IT GIVES YOU ALL THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INFORMATION AND IF YOU ARE A BOAT OWNER YOU CAN GET MARITIME REPORTS. THE HAND CRANK CAN WORK WHEN YOU HAVE NO BATTERIES. ANOTHER SUGGESTION IS TO HAVE DUPLICATES OF SOME CHARGEABLES SO YOU CAN USE THE SECOND ONE WHILE WAITING FOR THE POWER TO RETURN. CARDS, BOARDGAMES, PUZZLEBOOKS, DRAWING PAPER, BOOKS, CRAFT AND ART SUPPLIES CAN KEEP YOU BUSY. THERE ARE HAND CRANK FOOD PROCESSORS, BLENDERS, THERMOSES THAT ARE ALSO GOOD TO HAVE. 75D8B265-A5F6-466D-B60C-DFFBF3597058.jpeg602F8E62-0BF5-4A40-9A01-406FECA23DC3.jpeg

I have never had a partial outage like this.  But if there was still some power, it should be a good way to live for a bit.

@50Mickey"So it does work inside your apartment? From what I read about apartment generators they are good for powering a laptop or some lights but they have very limited power."

Yes.  The generators are specfically made for apartments.  The one I have- Goal Zero Yeti 400 kept my wall unit air conditioner, my upright freezer, fridge, tv & comp running.

I should add you need to get the kind that you specifically need depending on your appliances.  The Home Depot sales person helped us decide what we needed for our needs.

Re: I think I have a form of PSTD

I am sorry thatbthe storms are making you anxious. Are you alone? If so, that may be making you feel more vulnerable.

I live in a apartment and cannot have a generator. I do have battery operated candles, flashlights, and a battery power source so that I can plug in a fan, phone, iPad, etc.  I also have food supplies that do not require power to prepare.  I do try to have music or an audio book playing to drown out the silence.  Someone suggested speaking with your doctor-- a good idea to get help, as needed.

I have learned that having a plan and needed supplies makes me feel more in control of some life events.  Good luck.

@Still Raining @The irony of this is that your screen name is "Still Raining."⛈ Ask your Doctor for a very short term amount of medication without refills so you can deal with this anxiety. Be sure and let him know that the anxiety is pretty severe and that you only need a tiny supply so you can function in the times you feel like this. Try a telemedicine visit with the office. Tell the doc all your anxiety symptoms.

@Mz iMac  This is new information to me. Can your apt. generator power your refrigerator? I'm interested in getting a couple. I'm assuming it is not gasoline powered.

The reason the big generators your complex has must be used outside is because they are gasoline powered. They can give off carbon monoxide and they are designed to be used outdoors, away from windows.
