@gidgetgh : I never gave up my insurance when I got Medicare; my Federal bcbs became my supplemental. I have been on Medicare for almost 12 years and I'm very happy with my coverage.

It's not about Medicare, it's about officially being in that "retired" category when that's not how you see yourself. My bff continued to work until she was 73 and I remember that she found getting that Medicare card upsetting. She still had coverage from her job so she didn't need Medicare. I think getting the card reminded her that she was 65.
@chrystaltree - exactly.
I so agree! I was still working when I was eligible so didn't need it right away but when I did it was WHAT! How can I possibly qualify for medicare, I'm barely 45 (in my mind) LOL. Your feelings are understandable, I called it adjusting to another new phase of my life. And it's not a bad phase and I'm enjoying life.

Doctors refer to it as ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE....

He is retired (was) sorry, he passed away 3 weeks ago, so our health insurance was always free. His military insurance was his supplement which didn't cost us anything. I am still covered under hismilitary insurance until I turn 65 when I too am stuck paying for it.
@Miss Pepsi - My deepest sympathies to you on the loss of your husband. I am so sorry. I lost mine also recently, in mid July. Lots of life changes for both of us.
I am so sorry for your loss. to say it stinks is an understatement

Wow, wonder if it's a state thing. DH and my supplemental, deductible of $185 for each of us, DH is 78 cost 162 I am 66 103. We have no copays and it has cost nothing more than the deductible. Even considering the amount deducted from SS this is really affordable considering I was paying over $1,000 per month just for myself.
We also buy the cheapest prescription plan as we are on no regular meds, other than one prscription ey drop that is like $3 for 3 months.

I am on an advantage plan my premium is 0. I only pay the medicare premium. All my meds are covered under this plan at 100% I have no deductible only have copays. The highest copay I have paid is $40 for a specialist.
I am currently paying a lot less than when I was working. My deductible for single coverage was $3,500. Never met the deductible. I was very happy to go on Medicare my costs went down dramatically.

@gidgetgh Look at it as though it was the start of your new life. You have so many years to go and be sure you live all of them well.

Hi, I have been there for 16 years now. I had good medical coverage when I was working, and when I retired the coverage stayed the same. However!
On retiring it was a free plan, but after 3 years my great Union voted out the free plan for retirees. So nice of my 33 year fellow Union friends. And they also voted out my Raise with every 3 year contract. So my retirement now is base on 1994 $$$$, wasn't that nice of my Union Brothers(sisters, they don't use that word)
Still pretty good coverage but what started free in 1991, now costs me $200 per month and the plan is nowhere near the same as the one when I was working. Each year it seems cost more and my network seems to shrink.
Anyways, welcome to a young 65. Age is what you make it.
