Re: I saw a man at the grocery store using one of those scooters

[ Edited ]

I’ve even seen a gal at the gym working out with a trainer

using a scooter...and an older lady going to Silver Sneakers class

using one. Very mobile but of course, not for everyone.

Yes, that's why stores have them.  They are a courtesy for people who have mobility problems and can't walk up and down the aisle of big stores.

No No No - this isn't something the store has - this is a scooter you kneel on and scoot around if you have foot or ankle surgery.

Seriously - how could you drive with your rt foot in a huge cast?

Re: I saw a man at the grocery store using one of those scooters

Today I saw a man walking with a red tipped cane, which indicated that he was vision impaired. However, he was wearing earphones and was obviously listening to music. I was flummoxed. He was walking with a woman who was also wearing headphones. I suppose she was guiding him but to me they presented a risk of injury...he not hearing or seeing and she not hearing.

After surgery, you’re placed in a boot for total immobility for

roughly 1-2 weeks...meaning No Driving.

After the 2nd week, you’re allowed a driving boot which allows

one to drive w/ some flexibility in the foot.

The gentleman using the one-legged scooter was probably

using this from day one...and will continue to use it for many weeks

after the surgery even though he’s driving.

How do I know this? I have a wonky toe...and right-foot surgery

is somewhere in my future & I’ve talked w/ a ton of people how

to live with right foot impairment...driving boot w/ scooter.

I don't know where you get this misinformation but when I had my foot and ankle fusion I was in a cast 8 weeks and a surgical boot for 8 more weeks. Non weight bearing the entire time. The rehab took forever after 4 months in a wheelchair. With this device you could remain mobile so you would not get that muscle atrophy I experienced.I was so weak it was difficult just to walk from one end of the house to the other.

My case, it was a toe, not foot/ankle fusion.

Time with non-weight-bearing movement will be much, much less.

Plus I’m in very good health, so recovery will be quicker.

My doctor is part of Plano Orthopedic Sports Medicine, here in DFW.

They deal with athletes from high school, college & beyond.

Unless you’re an athlete, chances are you won’t understand, so...

I have bad arthritis in my other ankle and have considered having the fusion . My podiatrist tells me all the time I need to have it. But I am afraid I won't do well with the scooter because of the implants in my knees. My podiatrist thinks I should get one to try it out ( they are rented thru his office) and see if I can use it. My fused ankle is so strong - I would like to have both be strong.

Did you ever consider they may both be very hard of hearing and these are some type of hearing aides. My father's hearing aides were a box he wore in a small harness on his chest because the little ones in the ear weren't strong enough.People should not judge what they don't know - especially about other's handicapps.Isn't it bad enough to be handicapped - you certainly don't need to put up with criticism from the uninformed.

I'm not sure I'm coordinated enough to be able to figure out how to use one of those scooters!

Huge cast or removable boot like pictured?  I had the boot last year, I wore it all the time except while driving.  We do what we have to do.  I wasn't about to sit home for 6 weeks because of it.  But a huge cast?  No, couldn't drive with that.
