Meloxicam (or Mobic) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory.

I will just add this to all the other advice given here. I had total knee replacement 7 years ago. I put it off and put it off. All the cortisone shots, pills and heat/ice and Tramadol. Yes, ,Tramadol is a controlled substance ( narcotic) Before it was classified a scheduled drug I was on it for almost 5 years for arthritis and fibromialgia. If it had been classified as a narcotic when I started taking it, I would have refused it. Yes, I said 5 years. I was on a slow, low dose. Finally my doctor said that it was time to get off. Yes, I had to be weaned off of it. It took 4 months. I had no side affects. I now take Meloxicam once a day.
I guess what I am saying is it really sounds like you need a knee replacement and should see an orthopedic doctor because nothing is going to give you long term relief and the knee is just going to keep rubbing bone against bone. The cartilage is gone so there is nothing there to protect you from all that pain. The final thing is this is your decision, either live with it or get the knee fixed. I've been there and I know what pain you are going through. Good Luck!

@Luvsmyfam, I have many times and it is really good for reducing inflammation which causes so much of the pain. I don't think tramadol works any better than aleve or some over the counter something.
A Steroid pack is not a long term steroid so I don't think you should be afraid of it.
I never have any bad side effects from that oral pack of steroids if that's what it is-usually 7 days?
I don't do well with a lot of medictions and I've never had any bad experiences with this.
A knee brace helps a lot too!

@DrakesMomma Yep. I take it now and then for my arthritic knees. Helps a lot.

I am adding my opinion on the oral steroids. If you are only prescribed 6 you should have no ill effects from them. I took them for severe back pain and they really helped. Also, 6 should not interfere with sleeping. Good luck.

When I worked in a hospital and had very bad back pain, they would take me to the back room and shot me with a syringe of tramadol, because it was not an addictive drug, like vicodin and it took the pain away so i could continue working.

@qvcaddition Tramadol is a controlled substance. You should have seen what I had to go through to get a prescription, which I ended up throwing out.

@Luvsmyfam @You might want to ask your doctor about topical Voltaren or consult your pharmacist. It's now sold over the counter and its highly effective for knee pain. Your pharmacist will know a lot about the medicine. It is non addictive and does not affect your immune system the way cortisone does.
