Re: I got a call back from mammogram

I am seventy five and just had a mammogram. I got a call back and made an appt for July 5. The call back was four days ago so my wait time is two and a half weeks. I have dense breast tissue so I am at risk for breast cancer.

I've been dealing with health issues since I've been twenty but I never get used to it. IT is the wait time that's doing me in. I have a chronic pain problem that blew up; I know from the stress.

My gyn and primary tried to get an earlier appointment before I even asked. My retired gyn said it's too long to wait. I think I'd need to know the chairman of the board to change appointment.

So because my pain problem is really high I can't really do much except watch movies on TCM or Netfix.

I have a medical backround but not in any cancer background. Am finding mistakes on Google. e.g Medicare won't cover a diagnostic mammogram. This actually is determined by state.

If I have cancer it's there so worrying won't help but I can't stop.

Anything supportive will help.

I have to answer and tell you.  I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago at age 82.  The same diagnosis.  My mammogram was Ok, but a few months later a lump.  I had to wait all the weekend with worry, so I know your stress.  Come that Monday had mano first then ultrasound.  No lump no cancer.  Just dense breast.  It,s hard not to worry, but prayer helped.

Also, my friend had breast cancer at age 85.  She is now 93 and because they caught it so early, they did a lumpectomy and it is gone 8 years now.  So, I Know the panic, but there is so much hope you are Ok.  Please let me know after your test.  Prayers.  You will be OK

Too bad about the wait, but if you have dense breasts the routine should be familiar.  Be thankful they are being careful.  Best wishes.

Re: I got a call back from mammogram

When I was younger I had  dense breasts and was told

that it was more difficult to read. Nothing to do with

incidence of cancer. I routinely get sonogram along with mammo.  The md is a breast  surgeon and he reads it on the spot.

Years ago I had to wait over 2 weeks due to radiologists vacation. Torture, I wish you the very best.

Stay engaged and positive if possible.

I feel your anguish.  Same situation here went for a mammogram and got a call back and had to wait a considerable amount of time for the second one.  When I got to the clinic they told me they were also going to do an ultrasound - I was totally in panic mode but I remembered the doc saying they call back a lot of people just to be on the safe side.  All the best to you.

Re: I got a call back from mammogram

@lavendar , I’m so sorry they still do this.  When I was 37, I had colon cancer. As soon as I healed from the surgery, I scheduled my first mammogram as there is a link between the 2 cancers.

I also have dense breasts and I got the dreaded “we need more images” call.  They made me wait 2 weeks and I was beyond angry.  I was just dealing with one cancer and I was stressing about a second.

Everything turned out fine, but after that, my gynecologist ordered a sonogram yearly as well.  That way, the radiologist actually has to read it then and order more pictures  if needed before you go home.   They also are doing  3D mammograms now which give better pictures and less callbacks.  I go to a facility that does them and there is no extra cost with my insurance.

Keep busy and see your family and friends often to distract you from the worry.  Just keep saying, most callbacks are false alarms.

@DrytheIt's closer to eighteen days than eight. This center was known as a pioneer; now the area hospitals are just as good, if not better.

However I suspect people come for second opinions.

Re: I got a call back from mammogram

I also have dense breast tissue, and routinely have an ultrasound after my yearly mammogram.  Of course, this is a time of concern for every woman.  Try to tell yourself there’s a good chance there is nothing wrong.  And if there is, your chance of complete cure is enhanced by early discovery and appropriate action.  Waiting like this is so very hard.  You will be included in my prayer list.  Please know I wish you all the best.

Re: I got a call back from mammogram

I could have written this post.  I had a mammogram, got a call on a Friday that they needed more tests, I was in panic mode.  Had more tests and now I have been told I have 2 masses or lumps or something, but not cysts.  Saw a great doctor who has me scheduled for a biopsy(s) on Wednesday and then will find out the results the following week.

I am really worried about the biopsy and worried about the results.  It seems like I've put my life on hold until I find out.  I can't seem to even plan or think beyond the follow up date with the doctor.

Have told very few people because I don't want them to worry like I am.  I know I should be positive, I can't feel any lumps, and the mammograms/ultrasound found them, but it's really hard when I can't seem to look beyond the next couple of weeks.

I often wonder when I'm in a crowd, how many others are like me....don't even know they they have something that needs to be checked, or do know and are waiting like I am.  I am usually very strong, but I'm very worried.  Never smoked, no family history.

Thank you ladies who posted about the importance of a mammogram a few months ago, it was the motivation for me to get it done since the last one was about 1.5 years ago.

Re: I got a call back from mammogram

Maybe because they are not getting you back in for over two weeks, maybe they are not too worried about it. I had a call back one year and it turned out to be nothing, so hopefully it will be the same for you. I have heard that call backs are common so I will hope and pray for you that all is fine.
