Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

Exercise is cumulative and its benefits will be with for the rest of your life. The more you can do today, as you are physically able, will help you far into your senior years. Do it now because there may be a day when you will no longer be able to do it.

Huh ...  While I admire those who can do the same treadmill or same bike or same whatever .... I just don't think it's sustainable for decades.

Personally, I exercise most when I mix it up and have a bigger variety of options.   Plus, the excessive heat factors in.

I have RA, and while I still use my Pilates machine,  some days I prefer a walk in the park.  In summer, it's a walk in an air conditioned mall that has benches here and there.  Or walking the perimeter at Target.

I know it's important to keep moving, but I have never "moved" the same amount each and every day.  If I'm having a low energy day, I do a low energy exercise.

I could be the exception here .... but using the exact same piece of equipment for long periods just isn't sustainable.

It is sustainable for decades.  I started on the exercise bike in 1985 and now I am on my 5th bike.  I increased my time periods on the bike as the years went by.  At one time I was riding 4 hrs. in the morning and one to two more at night.

Now I am sixty I am only riding 3 hours a day first thing every morning.  If I am going to read a book then I would rather not be sitting still.  As I decrease my time period I have had to adjust my diet to stay at my same weight.

@beckyb1012  Wow! That many hours of biking? Amazing! You must have a very happy heart and some great looking gams! I get so bored when I bike inside....try watching TV....still bored. 😔

@SeaMaiden

You might want to check the @bopper  monthly Exercise Thread that is in this forum.

I think everyone, except maybe those athletes that are competing, run into this same issue. It would not be a new experience for me, as I have been through, what I call, these phases.

For me it's a matter of getting my body and my brain on the same electrical/physical  frequency. Most regular exercisers find, on some days, just getting started to be the hardest part. From there mind/body connect and away we go.

Having some specific motivating factor seems to keep me on track. It can be just recovering from an injury or serious health event, and for me both are always a motivator in just starting.

When running to compete for better distance times. On days I just wasn't with it, I would tell myself, just start and if it just isn't there? Stop! More times than not, I keep going.

Another mental thing I have used is this. "Do this while you are able, a day may come that you physically can't". That works for me most of the time.

Now it's time!  Get ye goin!

I'm in the same boat. I want to want....to exercise, but I don't. I dust out gym equipment as well. I can't get into using the machines. I force myself to walk with music through ear pods. Walk, walk, and walk more. I just don't care for our elliptical machines, or any others for that matter.

Don't know your age, but there was a song decades ago by one of my favorites, Fats Domino. It was "I'm Walkin" !  That is what you are doing and I say just keep doing it.

Walking is great exercise. You can control your effort by walking slow/faster, and on flat ground or up slight hills. Ups your heart rate and a little incline helps strengthens your legs.

Sounds like enough to me. If you are doing it, just keep it up.

This will sound weird to some.  I watch Holocaust movies along with all WWII movies and Holocaust survivor stories when on my treadmill. The time goes much faster and I have learned a lot. This may not be what you would choose to watch but it works for me.   Choose what interests you.

I can't get in the mode either. Throughout the worst of the pandemic I was out there walking as it gave me something to do that was outdoors. I walked every day regardless of the weather. I enjoyed it. I'm sure exercise is good for you but honestly even though I enjoyed it, I saw no real benefit. Didn't make me more energetic, sleep better, eat less, etc. This summer has been so hot there is no way I'm doing that. Unfortunately now I don't even think about it. Maybe I'll get motivated in the fall.

Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

Physical therapist gave me a bunch of exercises to do each day, along with daily walking (and remaning active per doctor).

I can feel the difference on days I miss my walk because of heat or rain!

@Tinkrbl44  That wouldn't surprise me. DH thinks it's weird, too!

It has given me a broader understanding of that war and sadly enough, I can see it happening again if the world isn't careful.

The survivor stories are very interesting to me.
